I presented today. Then Djasa and andrea presented. Chapter 7 section 3 Politics in the Guilded AgeEmergence of Political Machines--They were expecting a new power structure because theirs wasnt working. They had organized groups throughout the city and they controled the cities completly. Organized it as a pyramid. If you were at the top you werent looked upon. The political machine is a power structure. It's not a machine. It's an organized group of people.Political Boss--It may or may not be an officially elected major. He had a huge influence in court. Roscoe Conkling was the boss in like New York. He gave a lot of money to schools and orphanages. The new business the government supported well. If the government supported your business then all the people in the business would vote for them.Immigrants and the Machine--The immigrants who were in the machine were 1st and 2nd generation. They weren't very educated at all. If the boss was an immigrant then the boss could talk to the other immigrants. If the immigrants voted for the boss then he would provide food and housing for them so they could live well.Business Buys Influence--At the end they started figuring out that the boss wasnt doing what he said. The business then left support of the bosses. The bosses then turned to wealthy business owners. They said that they would raise their teriffs. Grover Clevland won the election and he raised the teriffs. A teriff is a tax on imported products. They would pay more than they needed to.
