10/15/09 - 7-1 The New Immigrants

7-1 the new immigrantsToday April started to present. Immigrants started coming over to America during the late 19th centry and earyl 20th century. 30 million immigrated to America. Most immigrants were coming from Europe. In 1907 1 million arrived from Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Russia. They would come to Ellis Island. The Chinese and Japanese would arrive in the west coast. A lot of them came beacuse of ther gold rush. By 1920 over 200,00 Japanese were on the west coast. Between 1880 and 1920 people from Jamiaca, Cuba, Puerto Rico and other islands came to America. All immigrants came on steamships because it was the cheapest way to travel. They shared toilets and were packed in so much that they couldn't even move sometimes. When immigrants arrived on the east coast to Ellis Island they went through questioning for sometimes more than 5 hours. Between 1892 and 1924 17 million immigrants came to America on the east coast. Angel Island is on the east coast, this is where the Chinese came. They were a lot thougher on the immigrants here. They wanted to make sure the Chinese would be loyal. They were put in these gross buildings to stay in that were in really bad shape. Somtimes they would have to stay there for up to two years. Immigrants brought over their religion and would set up churches. Immigrants that were already settled there and had been for awhile didn't like the new immigrants that were coming with totally different customs and religions. In 1897 the congress passed a bill that required immigrants to have to be able to read 40 words of english or native language. Segregation agaisnt Asians was a big problem. The Gentelmens Agreement was a deal that the government made with Japan to limit immigration from Japan.7-2 The Challenges of UrbanizationUrbanization was when immigrants came over and cities grew a lot. Some immigrants would try to find houses in the outskirts of the cities but sometimes they would just have rooms in the city. Five families would share a room. Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's?Immigrants came over for jobs and new opportunities so they settled in cities to find jobs. Farmers also moved to cities.
