On page 242 there is a diagram that shows these.Horizontal Integration--They would take all the companies out so you would be the only one and you could jack the prices up.Vertical Integration--They would try to outbuy any company that would affect them. They would buy the railroads, the oil wells, the shipping and the stores. They would own everything. A lot also came from Italy, Austria, Hungary and Russia.Chinese/Japanese--They came to the west coast. About 300,000 people came because of the gold rush. They came because of the Industrial boom which promised work for almost anyone.Life in the New Land--All the immigrants traveld by steamship which was very cheap. They weren't allowed on the deck and they were all in a crowded area. A lot of people didn't make it because they diedEllis Island--Located on the New York Harbor. The inspection could last for up to 5 hours. First they would see a doctor then they would ask them questions. They needed translators and some of the translators felt bad for the immigrants so they would lie to the people asking the questions.Angel Island--A lot different than Ellis Island. They were a lot meaner than Ellis Island. They would recieve very hard questions. Sometimes they would have to stay there for days. They didn't really take care of them.Religion--It was very important to the immigrants. The different religions clased from old to new.Immigration Restrictions--America was thought as a "melting pot". There were a lot of customs and religions and stuff like that. The nativist were the people who were already living there. They didn't care that people were coming but they didn't like all the religions that were being brought. There was law that was passed that said that they had to read 40 words in english otherwise they wouldn't be let in. The chinese would except really low wages and people were scared because they thought they were gonna get fired.The Gentlemen's Agreement--They separated the Japanese students and put them in their own school. They agreed to limit emigration of unskilled people.
