Ch. 6.3: Continued-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business? Charles Darwin was a biologist who created the theory of evolution. He came up with the study of survival of the fittest. This is where the stronger animal, plant, or force in nature naturally takes control of the weaker animals, plants, or forces. Naturally, the week serve the strong. It's nature. Charles Darwinism is when this practice applied to bussiness. Darwinism is when large companies begin forming monopolies and take control of the weaker links in the business. The smaller businesses or companies fall to the large and powerful ones.-What are labor unions and what is their purpose? Labor unions are groups of people who work towards gaining better working conditions for those in the workforce. Labor unions would organize strikes and protests that would demand better working conditions for workers in a business, company, or wherever someone works. Labor unions earned the weekend, overtime, holidays, and many more policies that have greatly aided workers. Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples. Back in the day, Labor unions were despised. People didn't want to lose their jobs altogether. Eventually though, the labor unions succeeded in making many progressive policies in the workforce.Ch. 5.3:-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains? Farmers had to pay very large amounts of money to ship their crops from their farms to where they were going to sell the crops. They also faced problems with housing. Because there are few trees on the Great Plains, log cabins could not be built. Instead, farmers built houses made out of sod.Farmers had a tough time making a living. Farmers gathered together to form what was known as the Patrons of Husbandry, and later, the Grangers.-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in? Polulism is the movement of pepole. Populists were farmers, and others, who banded together to demand better conditions for the common people. They called for a restriction on immigration, and an eight hour workday. They also got secret voting established.Secret voting is when you vote for s policy, person, or whatever, without anyone else being able to know who or what you voted for. The populists were apposed to immigrants because companies and businesses would fire people who demanded better working conditions. The boss would then hire immigrants who would gladly work for much less than the previous guy was working for.The panic of 1893. Farmers were overextended with debts and loans. Many railroads went bankrupt, the gold supply was running low, people traded money for gold, silver mines closed, and over 15,000 businesses and over 500 banks collapsed. This really sounds like a crappy time for our American forefathers
