Today we finished doing my presentation over chapter 6-2. Next we started with Jessicas presentation.Ch. 7.2-Why did cities grow so quickly in the late 1800's and early 1900's?Because immigrants were coming for jobs because they didnt ask for very much pay. And so populations grew rapidly.- What problems did cities fact due to the rapid increase in population?Tthey had trouble with ammount of housing. Sometimes bought houses out of town but then had transportation issues.Some people rented rooms in the boardinghouse in the central city.\It was also hard to find safe drinking water. Few homes had plumbing.Had trouble controlling diseases from the water.The town was often dirty because of trash and manuer and smoke from factories.There wasnt dependable trash collection.There was lots of crime like pickpockets and theives.First salaried police force in 1844 but was to small to have impact on crime.limited water led to fires.there was many deadly fires after earthquakes.First paid fire department in 1853Automatic sprinkler in 1874Replaced wood buildings witth brick stone and concrete.-What did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the cities?Rented rooms in the boardinghouse in the central city and bought houses outside of town.The settlement house movement.Social Gospel movementJanie Perter barrett founded the first settlement house for african americans.Bruns also told us about the Great Chicago Fire.17,500 buildings were destroyed. Many people were killed and injured.And The fire in san fransisco caused by an earthquake.
