Chapter 5, Section 1, Cultures Clash on the Prarie: The Indians tried to touch a white man with the coup stick to earn a feather if they get away from them unharmed. The Indians believed that one great spirit controlled everything. The Indians made tools, weapons, and shields. The women were considered home makers. They set up and took down the Tipi's. They also cooked the food. The children learned lessons by stories. What children did depended on their gender. The girls played with little tipis and deerskin dolls. Boys played with Bows and Arrows. Pretended to go on raids and hunts. Were taught to become better fighters. 12 year olds can go on first hunt. They used pretty much everything from the buffalo's. They followed where the buffalo went. They made alot of different stuff out of the hide. In 1540 Indians were brought over by the spanish. In 1680 Indians revolted spanish left the horses. Indians used dogs to carry their stuff. In 1858 gold was found in Colorado. People went to set up business. In 1877 the Dawes Act was passed to "Americanize" Indians. 160 Acres per family. 80 Acres to unmarried. In 1923 2/3 land set aside. Battles were started because indians going off into land not theirs. Treaties(Treaty of Fort Laramie). treaties didn't last long at all.
