Today in class we mostly finished our Republican/Democrat debates. We finished off these debates with debating about US’s role in Iraq, US’s role in Afghanistan, and US’s role in United Nations. These topics were some of the least debated. Everyone had the same opinion really. We all basically wanted to stay in Iraq and slowly move out into Afghanistan to eliminate al-Qaeda.However, I sided with the Republican Party on my point of view of US’s role in Iraq. I think that Americans should stay in Iraq as long as it’s needed to maintain the democratic government that took so long to set up.I believe that we should gently into Afghanistan, not as quickly as Obama would like to, but enough so that we can hold Iraq and use Iraq as a base for the assault we will lead into Afghanistan. We could use their influence to sway the people of Afghanistan towards us an away from the Taliban.I believe that we should either strengthen UN’s powers or separate it from it completely. The UN is just limiting the ability of US to maintain a strong pro-democratic government. I guess the most important thing is that most of the countries in the UN don’t see a point in removing tyrannies from other countries. How can they expect to hold peace if they don’t take down the people who are threatening to start war?
