Monday: Puck cartoon- senate, true bosses are big monopolies,
Portrays standard oil as octopus: big evil monster, produce, arms are controling whithouse, congress etc...was a play on the pipelines also, standard oil had their arms on everything and were everywhere
Chevron ows trademark today- has standard station in each of the 16 states they serve

Richest person in US history is - 660 billion, 6-7 time that of Waren Buffet and Bill Gates (two richest men in the world), brought about: weekend, child labor laws, overtie, minimum wage, injury protection, workmens compensation insurance, etc.
Labor Union:
- Hated immigrants (bc they needed jobs so bad it didn't matter to immigrants), power in numbers,
- They struggled to win strikes bc: All power was in hands of owners, would simply fire workers and hire immigrants who needed works-immigrants had it better in US factories than in Europe, would hire strikebreakers to take place of workers, would impose lockouts, would blacklist workers, workers were called communists and socialists
- Labor Day was set up as a holiday bc some workers died at the hands of the US Army during Pullman Strike of 1895- so president and congress passed it toappease labor union
Tuesday: Immigration urbanization~
Why did immigrants come to the usa?
- Push-Pull factors

- Fimine, land shortages, religious or political persecution, war, in debt/trouble
- PULL FACTORS:
- Farming(Homestead Act), mining, working on railroad, cattle ranching, factory work
- more opportunities-$$-American Dream

- "Streets paved with gold"
WASP- White, Anglo, Saxon, Protistant

Wednesday:
Four steps:
- Leaving home
- Board ship
- Inspection
- Leave Ellis Island- Exchange your money....about 1/3 stayed in New York
Before immigrants came, statue of liberty was about sending liberty out into the rest of the world- then it turned to mean that America was welcoming the immigrants
Ellis Island- White Europeans (didn't stay overnight rarley)-stayed hours at max usually
Angel Island- Darker Asians, stayed for days - years (was like a prison almost), were gonna be destroyed-but saw a bunch of writing on walls- so they petitioned not to.
Why did people dislike immigrants in late 1800's early 1900's?
- Took jobs
- Kept wages low
- Different culture
- Racism (not WASP)
Chinese Exclusion Act: Banned all Chinese immigration to US from 1882-1902...why ban them? bc they took jobs and didn't like how they looked (racist)
Gentleman's Agreement-1907: Informal agreement between US and Japan, goal was to reduce tensions between US and Jaban
US Agreed to: Accept the Japanese people who were already here, permit wives and children and parents to come over, end discrimination against Japanese-American children in California schools
Japan Agreed to: Stop issuing any new passports for Japanese citizens wishing to work in USA.
Friday:
Problem: Fires
Solutions: Better building codes-sprinklers, metal frames, fire escapes etc. full-time paid fire fighters
Problem: Poverty due to low pay at work
Solutions: Labor unions, minimum wage laws, shorter ours, child labor laws, churchs & rich helped
Political machine: Political organization, usually controlled by a single "boss", that controlled votes and has administrative control of a city, sounty, or state. Provided social services and jobs to people (recent immigrants) in exchange for votes---very corrupt--was hard to catch anyone because everyone was 'bought off'
Boss Tweed- The boss of the Democratic political machine in NYC, building that he worked in was Tammany Hall, most important thing for him was money
workers and captains-ward bosses- city boss (order of power-least to biggest)
