The Alcohol Tobacco Firearms (ATF) was founded on July 1, 1972. ATF is a law enforcement agency in the United States' Department of justice. The reason why ATF was created is to protect communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. People who work for the ATF are highly trained. They investigate violations of federal laws relating to firearms, explosives, and alcohol and tobacco diversion. Byron Todd James is an American lawyer and former director of ATF.
