Monday-
A man killed 50 people in Las Vegas during a shooting, which is the deadliest mass shooting in US history. He was a 64 year old man, who shot into a concert of 30k people. He was living with a woman at the time, and they took her into custody to question her. Trump so far has only tweeted about it.
Quality Education- Without education you wouldn't have a stable job, writing letters, reading, and a successful life. The illiteracy of Africa is 42%, in Niger 31% of students drop out in elementary school--these statistics are worse for females. In Niger, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia, and Afghanistan it's impossible or nearly impossible to get into school. A famous person is Malala Yousafzai, she wanted and education, but she was born in Pakistan. She was shot in the head and survived. To create a better education we need to; must have equality for all gender & have common school supplies for the teachers and students.
Tuesday-
Sustainable cities and communities- Slums and homelessness are problems. Some people think that these people are homeless because they screwed up, so they don't believe they should help. Others think that we should include the homeless people and the people living in the slums. There are less slums and more urbanization is going up. Slums- urban areas overcrowded by poor people Urban- developed like a town or city Rural- country not in a town. It's up to town leaders and communities to help end the slums and homelessness. WORLD- 54% of people live in urban areas. By 2050 2/3 will live in urban areas. There are a lot of mega cities booming, a mega city is a city with 10 million people or more living in it.
Ending world hunger- People are starving because they aren't eating enough good, and it is making our population decrease. Goal: by 2030 to end hunger, particularly in the poor and with children. The viewpoints are different, most people want to help the cause, by either donating money or supplies. Some people though don't care and think that the starving can help themselves. 1/9 people are malnourished. Majority of people that people are starving are in developing countries. Asia is the continent with the most hungry people. 1/4 children suffer from stunted growth. 66 million elementary aged kids attend school hungry, 23 million of those kids are in Africa. Poor nutrition causes nearly half of childhood deaths for kids under the age of 5. 1/7 people are hungry, 1/3 of food is wasted. Hunger can be a cycle. There are a couple of solutions; Sustainable food; Heifer International raises money and then for example send a family a cow. Food donations; food drives & food is shipped to areas in need. Urban Farming; helps families gain control of their own food resources.
Innovation, infrastructure, industry- Infrastructure like roads, communication technologies, sanitation, electric and water is scarce in developing countries. 2.6 billion people in the world don't have those things.1 - 1.5 billion people don't have access to reliable phone service. The UN wants to develop quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure. Make basic needs more common and updated.
Wednesday-
No Poverty- Since 1990 the poverty rate in the world has been cut in half, but still a lot of people live on $1.25. Some people don't think that we should donate money to third world/developing countries. Extreme poverty is more common in countries that are in conflict ie; Syria. Families in extreme poverty have a hard time getting food to their families, meaning 1/4 kids have a height deficiency because they can't afford the proper food. Women are more likely to be in poverty because for every dollar a an makes a woman makes $.78. The only country that doesn't pay you for having a day off for being sick or medical reasons is the United States. If the government didn't have this law then we could bring 40% of people out of poverty.
Life On Land- Goal: Sustainable manage forests, combat desertification, land degradation"In 1630 there was 1.023 million acres of forest land in the USA, not there is only 766,000 acres. Desertification is caused by droughts & because of that lack of life. Land degradation, is us polluting water, damaging land and making the land crap. Us destroying our forests has endangered 10 species, desertification has affected 2.6 billion people that rely on agriculture. The solutions are technology, spreading out resources, and use more eco-friendly machinery
Thursday-
Climate Change- The world will warm 3 degrees Celsius, this will affect crops, sea levels and more. Goal: Lower usage of greenhouse gases and use less power. From 1980-2012 the average global temp has increased by .85 degrees C. Global carbon dioxide has doubled since 1990. The sea has risen 19 cm. We need to get more people to turn to renewable resources, give up fossil fuels, and consume less-turn off what is not being used.
Clean water and sanitation- Around 5 million people don't have clean water, some countries don't have proper plumbing or a clean way to wash themselves. Droughts in countries make it hard to get water, or families are too poor. 600k people died from water diseases this year, almost 600 million people don't have safe drinking water. Un wants to make sure that everyone has clean drinking water and plumbing. UN is going to different countries that don't have clean drinking water and putting faucets in the ground to get clean drinking water. They send filters and Lifestraws to help make the water safe and clean to drink. The UN is also putting in buildings that collect rainwater. The people without safe water is going down one person each second. Mostly third-world and developing countries have it the worst
Friday-
A new hurricane called Hurricane Nate is set to hit New Orleans on Saturday night, it also has the potential to hit the same place in Florida that Irma hit. New Orleans is under a state of emergency.
