Jazz Age of the 1920's, started in New Orleans mainly among African-Americans, became the dance music of the 20's.

Age of Prohibition, alcohol became illegal, age of suffrage
Suffrage- the right to vote, gave women a voice when it came to politics
Outside of Woodrow Wilson, Republican presidents through the entire age. Called the Republican Era, two of the worst presidents in the entire history of the US. Harding had a lot of corruption and Hoover had the stock market crash.
The Lost Generation (1883-1990), Boom to Bust, Decade of Normalcy, when Harding ran he said he wanted a return of normalcy, focus on America, get out of the League of Nations, he won and went back to "normalcy". Advertising Age, radios, advertisements, radio came of age in the 20's, aimed at advertising towards women.
The Golden Age of Sports, when the NBA started, and NFL started, Babe Ruth transformed baseball in the 20's, people could now go to the game in cars and keep track through radio.
Era of Permanent Prosperity, everything will always be good. If it's too good to be true, it probably is, describes the phrase. A lot of it based upon borrowed money.
The Red Scare (1919-1920)- fear that communists would take over our government/country. Communism (China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cuba)- A government that has all of the power in the country, no freedom of speech or press. Karl Marx hated capitalism (free enterprise, people own business). He believed that income inequality was the root of capitalism and thought people could do better. He thought the poor people should rise up and overthrow the government in a revolution and create a Utopian society where everyone is equal and participating. In practice, it didn't work well, linked to Stalinists. In practice, it does have a semblance of equality, but everyone is equal in poverty.

CCCP- Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (1922-1991)- Russia leads the Soviet Union
Vladimir Lenin (1917-1924 (leader of USSR))- Soviet Union had been at war for over a decade. True communism wasn't achieved because he died (hard to know if it would have been achieved).
Power struggle ensues after Lenin dies, replaced by Joseph Stalin. He transformed Marx's vision to his own and through purges and other things, developed the "practice" of communism.
J. Edgar Hoover was in charge of the FBI for about 50 years. He was an assistant to the attorney general. The Palmer Raids were a series of raids by the Department of Justice to capture and arrest suspected radicals and deport them from the US. Attorney General Palmer and Hoover did the raid. Raids and strikes got national attention, as well as race riots in cities. Two sets of mail bombs and included one to the Attorney General himself. After WWI was over, strikes increased. African-Americans began to move north and race riots began in cities in the north. More than 500 foreign citizens were deported during the raids.
Sacco and Vanzetti Case- a murder took place when two people murdered a paymaster and guard. Due to the anti-immigrant, anti-communist times of the Red Scare, two Italian immigrants and known anarchists, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested for the crime. Little evidence was presented against them. The were put to death for the murder. They appealed their convictions but were shot by firing squad in 1927.

From 1870-1920 was the golden age of immigration in the United States. The biggest decade of immigration was 1901-1910 up until that point.
The Immigration Act of 1924 (National Origins Act/Asian Exclusion Act) greatly reduced immigration to the US. The law was aimed at restricting immigration of Southern Europeans, Eastern Europeans, and Jews. Severely limited the immigration of Africans and prohibited the immigration of Arabs, East Asians, and Indians (because of racism). The real purpose of the act was to preserve the ideal of American homogeneity (same genes/keep it for white Anglo-Saxon protestants)
W.A.S.P (White-Anglo-Saxon-Protestants)
Presidents Harding, Coolidge, Hoover- all won in blow-out fashion, despite Harding and Hoover being some of the worst presidents in history
Republican Philosophy (1920's)- Conservatism as opposed to? Liberalism or Progressiveness against Conservatism. Low taxes, high tariffs and less government was the Republican philosophy. Lower immigration was also a Republican philosophy. Laissez-Faire is less government in businesses. Rugged individualism is a Republican philosophy. A return to "Normalcy", focus on the United States.
Albert Fall-Teapot Dome Scandal- The Secretary of the Navy was bribed by the company to give rights to an area in Wyoming.

Harding's Death and Funeral- Warren Harding was not in the best health, very stressed. His doctor wasn't exactly qualified, and had one medically trained doctor. He favored the other doctor versus the qualified doctor. His wife refused to have an autopsy so people spread rumors that she killed him, however it is not widely agreed.
Impact of automobiles- people could go places.
Planes- could mail carry, transport small groups of people, was used for the military.
Rural vs Urban
1920 Census- 51.2% of people lived in cities of 2500 or more- first time more people lived in the cities versus in the country. People began to move from the rural areas to the cities.
1922-1929- more than 2 million people moved from farms to the cities each year. African Americans began to move to the north and get jobs in the cities.
Rural Areas tried to hold onto moral values and close social relationships, while cities were more open and liberal.
Urban Scene- Largest cities New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia.
Prohibition "The Noble Experiment" (18th Amendment)- 1920-1933. The manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages was illegal. Supporters mostly came from the rural South and West. Supporters were mostly women and factory owners.
Alcohol was allowed for medicinal and religious purposes. The Volstead Act created the Prohibition Bureau to enforce the law. Prohibition failed for 3 reasons (People despised it, saw it as government meddling, The Prohibition Bureau was underfunded, had only 1500 people to supervise the country, Organized crime became commonplace).
