Many strikes - Boston police strike, US Steel strike, United mine workers strike
Boston Police Strike - Police officers in Boston striked so there was no police force and then students and faculty from Harvard formed a police force
United Mine Workers 1909 - Profits were low for miners. Mining for anthracite. Miners wanted more pay, better conditions, and shorter hours.
Tuesday - 1920's Presentations
Harlem Renaissance - Cultural, Social, Artistic, Took place at the end of the WWI - Middle of the 1930's
Types of people that were present in the Harlem Renaissance - Writers, artists, musicians, photographers, scholars
Where are they from? - Most are from the south. Fled the caste system in order to find a place to freely express their talents. It is also known as the Great Migration.
Wednesday - 1920's Presentations
KKK - Ku Klux Klan - They hated anyone that wasn't white. They are still around. Followers wear white robes with white head pieces and the leader wheres all white.
Politics - The South was primarily Democratic and the North was primarily Republican. John W. Davis was a loser. In the 1928 election Texas went with the Republicans. In the 1920's the elections were dominated by Republicans.
Thursday - 1920's Presentations
Cars -
Model T - cheap car. 45 mph. 40% of cars on the road were Model T's. 15,000,000 miles on the car.
Tin Lizzie - 20 hp. 10 gallon fuel tank. Hand crank start. 1200 lbs. 1/2 the weight of today's cars.
General Motors - $680. GM. "GM should offer not cheaper cars but better quality" - Alfred Saloan. Aesthetics. Rounded body lines and shorter roofs. Variety of colors due to lacquer paint.
Chrysler - $995. 70 mph. Hydraulic brakes. Replaceable oil filter. Rubber engine mount. Contoured glass.
History of Electrical Light bulbs - The first discovery of electricity - 600 B.C. (static electricity). Thomas Edison created the first long lasting and reliable light bulb.
Inventions due to electricity in 1920 - Vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, washing machines
Electricity facts in 1920 - 1920- 35% of homes had electricity 1930- 68% of homes had electricity 1935- Electricity brought to rural areas
Friday - 1920's Presentations
Creationism vs Evolution - Creationism is the belief that humans were created on divine things (The Bible) and Evolution is the belief that things are created from other things that have evolved. Creationism ended up winning the trial over evolution.
