Tuesday- Harry Houdini and Flagpole Sitting
Scopes-Monkey Trial was a big trial about evolution. ACLU wanted to test the law and see if they could bring it down. William Jennings Bryan- special prosecutor. Scopes was found guilty because he didn't deny what he did. It was about whether or not you could teach evolution in schools.
Reilgious vs Secularists. Clarence Darrow asked Mr. Bryan to stand and testify as an expert witness, and he made him look very foolish. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100.
"Buy now, pay later" began to be a thing. Credit became popular, allowing the stock market to boom, buying on margin. People are in massive debt towards the end of the 20s and beginning of 30s.
High Tarriff Policy- High Tariffs would keep foreign products out of the country. Progressives lowered tariffs under Woodrow Wilson, good for consumer, and common person. Republicans wanted to raise tariffs, they wanted Americans to buy American. One of the causes of the Great Depression.
The Era of Permanent Prosperity- "As long as everyone has faith, everything will be fine."
Cult of Domesticity (Developed through 1800's)- Ideal of womanhood had four characteristics
1. Piety (religious)
2. Purity (has to save for marriage)
3. Domesticity (stay home)
4. Submissiveness (Take on husband's name, not the breadwinner)
World War I (1917-1918)
World War I interrupted the campaign for women's suffrage
Women took the men's jobs in WWI showing the country that they could do hard work.
Wednesday-
Margaret Sanger, founder of what is now Planned Parenthood (American Birth Control League), birth control opened the door for women to go to college and work more. It would keep changing women's rights and health issues.
In 30 years it went from 19% of college degrees to women to 39%, and today it is 60%.
Pink Collared Jobs- 1920's-1970's- Secretaries, Teachers, Nurses, low paying service occupations, gave women a taste of the work world.
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote the Great Gatsby described flappers as "lovely, expensive, and about 19."
Most flappers were Northern, urban, etc.
The Harlem Renaissance- African Americans settled in mostly Harlem. A big push to be proud to be of African ancestry, jazz music became huge in the cities.
W.E.B. DuBois- Leading African-American peace talker- precursor to Martin Luther King Jr.
James Weldon Johnson- Founder of NAACP
Marcus Garvey- precursor to Malcolm X. He pushed back to Africa principles.
Harlem Renaissance- Art, Literature, Music became popular.
The Cotton Club- speakeasy in Harlem. Only white people could attend, but black people could perform. Closed down in the 70s. Most famous speakeasy.
