1/15- No school, SWIBA

1/16- 2hr late start,

Theatre and flapper girls became popular, upper and middle class were very different in clothing styles

Cars were created and became popular and accessible

1/17- Basketball invented by Naismith,

Art Deco became popular in the 20s.

Baseball was still segregated between blacks and whites, became more accessible to other people.

Yankees were the best team in the 20s.

1/18- Charleston, Foxtrot were most popular dances, swing music became more popular, jazz age.

"Talkies" became a thing, with audio starting to pop up behind different silent movies.

Girls in volleyball wore skirts instead of shorts.

Airplanes were used to carry mail.

1/19- NASCAR was created in the 20s, by running from the police

Women's uniforms for soccer wore skirts and coveralls

Bootlegging- illegally making or distributing alcohol. Named because people carried liquor in the legs of boots. Most imported alcohol came in from Canada, Cuba, or the West Indies. The biggest threat was not from the Prohibition Bureau or the police but it was hijaking. 

Moonshine- illegally made alcohol. It wasn't safe, because it was not regulated by the government. Several hundred people a year died from drinking bad moonshine. In 1929 it is estimated that 700 million gallons of beer were produced in American homes.

Speakeasies- hidden bars. To obtain alcohol illegally, people went underground to secret bars (people spoke easily or quietly about it). To be admitted they would need a card or password.

Organized Crime- Came about as a result of Prohibition. Every major city had it's own gangs. Al Capone's bootlegging business in Chicago made over 60 million dollars a year. Due to gang violence, only nineteen percent of Americans supported Prohibition by 1925. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment.

St. Valentine's Day Massacre- supposed to be a meeting between Capone's and Moran's people. The police came in and killed most of Moran's people which strengthened Capone's people.

Templeton Rye- from Templeton, Iowa, popular alcohol to be smuggled. 

Science vs Religion- The Scopes Monkey Trial- In 1925, Tennessee passed the first law making it illegal to teach evolution in school. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it would defend any teacher willint o break the law. John Scopes, biology teacher from Dayton, accepted. Clarence Darrow was hired by the ACLU to defend Scopes, very good and accomplished lawyer. William Jennings Bryan was the special prosecutor.
