Zika Virus Spreading?

The Zika Virus is spread through mosquitoes. "The level of concern is high, as is the level of uncertainty," Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO's director-general, told her organization's executive board members. "We need answers quickly!" she stated. The virus has spread to the Americas and there has been 3 to 4 million cases reported in the last 12 months. Experts previously warned the virus is likely to spread in the United States. If you are planning on going out of country to places such as the Caribbean and Central and South America and are pregnant, I would suggest not to. This disease is very threatening. Some 80% of those infected with the Zika virus don't even feel sick, and most who do have relatively mild symptoms such as a fever, rash, joint pain or pink eye.

Zika mainly effects pregnant moms and their babies faces. While studies are underway to determine any links, millions of people live in areas with real fears about what this virus can do.

  • Good summary but you need to reply to student comments throughout the week. It's worth ten points per story.

  • I would probably be pretty worried about what it might do and if I could get it and if it will every go away. Im not really sure what it is but it doesn't sound good.

If a baby was every born with Zika, I would probably take it immediately to a doctor and the hospital or somewhere where they could help it. Like I said, im not really sure what this is or if it is severely life threatening. I would probably be a little scared though if a baby would be born with this virus

  • I would be very scared, and worried if I got the virus. I would try to avoid any situation that put me at risk to contracting it so I wouldn't have to worry about my possible child being affected. I hope a cure is found soon because this is not a good situation at all and is very sad. If my child somehow contracted it I would still love it the same because it wouldn't define who they are as a person.

  • I would stay away from people as much as possible if I had this disease, not only because I don't like certain people, but because I wouldn't want to get them sick as well. I think that people need to stay home and isolated whenever they get sick so they don't get others involved in their misery of being sick!

  • I would be very scared if I got this, especially if I was pregnant. It is weird how you don't feel sick or how you only have mild symptoms. Hopefully they will find a cure and stop to this and a limited number of people will be affected.

  • It would definitely be pretty scary because you would have no idea how long your child would live or how their life could be affected because of a disease you weren't even aware that you had! I would just try my best to watch for any signs or anything strange the baby did, but would still love them the same.

  • I would be scared and wouldn't want to have a child anytime soon. If my child was born with this virus I would love he/her just as much as I would if they had been born without it.

  • If I came upon this virus I would do my best to continue loving and caring for my child even though it may not be like the other kids. Right now there is no specific way to treat this virus so all you can do is be thankful for what you do have and make the best of it.

  • I probably wouldn't know I came across it, but I suppose it wouldn't really affect me because I won't ever get pregnant. I would do everything possible to help my child recover as much as possible from it and live normally.
