Year Round School?

As I am slowly counting down the days to summer, I wonder what woud happen if we did not have summer. Personally, I would go insane. Many people believe that year-round school is like having no summer; you are just always at school. I found this not to be true, though, and to me, year-round school does not seem that bad.

In the school system, we have now we have about 78 days off from school. 60 are for summer vacation, 5 for spring break, 10 for winter break, and 3 for thanksgiving break; this does not include weekends. In year-round school, they have 30 days off for summer break, 15 days off for spring break, 15 days off for winter break, 3 days for Thanksgiving break, and 15 days for fall break. In total, they also have 78 days off from school, not including weekends.

There is a lot of controversy about this topic, though. Many people believe if you only give students 30 days off, they will not have time to go on vacation, go to camps, or get summer jobs. Some also say that too many breaks are not suitable for education. On the other hand, some people say there is still time to go on vacation or go to different camps. They also argue that having these different breaks is just what students need. It prevents the summer from getting long and tedious and makes sure students do not get burnt out in the winter. Year-round school also allows students to learn more because teachers do not have to spend as much time reviewing.

Since I am used to the schedule, we have now. I think it would be hard to switch to a whole new plan. I do see the benefits to year sound school. Usually, in the winter and fall, I am ready for school to be over, so I think having a break would be a great thing to look forward to. I do not know how sports would work with the breaks in the middle of the season.  I think I could get used to a year-round schedule, and I see it becoming more popular in the future.

How would you feel about having year round school?

Do you know anyone who goes to a year round school?

What do you think is the biggest positive and negitive to year round school?

    • I agree, summer is a great time to relax and just forget about all the stress and negativity from school. I think having breaks throughout the fall and winter would be good for that too. Like you said there are pros and cons about everything.

  • I feel like if we had this schedule in the beginging I would be used to it, but since we dont I dont think I would like it. It dosesnt sound that bad, but I wouldnt want to be in school all the time and get stressed out. I like having our summer break becasue we get some time off and get to realx and not stress out about everything. I do not know anyone who goes to a year around school. I think a postive is that they stil get breaks and they are long breaks and a negative is that they wont have enough time to enjoy themselves and relax.

  • I think I would go crazy if we had year-round school because I like having a couple of months on to just do whatever I want. I don't know of anyone who goes to an all-year-round school. I feel like a negative would be feeling overwhelmed then a positive would be that you wouldn't forget anything you would learn.

    • Toward the end of summer I find myself getting a little bored, but at the same time I don't know if I could give up my long summer vacation.

  • I think many people would be against year-round school just because it takes away from peoples free time in the summer. Although, you could have many little breaks in between the school year instead of a longer summer. I think it would be a good idea but then I don't know how easy it would be to adjust. I like having a longer summer because you can do more stuff with your friends/family. Even with a longer summer, we still get little breaks for holidays and other things.

    • I think that the little breaks would be nice to have around the year. I agree though, I love having the free time in the summer. I love not having to worry about waking up, homework, and other many other stresses that come from school.

  • It would be a hard adjustment, but I think it's something to consider. I've heard of multiple different ideas for a year-long school and not each schedule is the same. I've heard of having 2-3 weeks of school and then a week-long break throughout the year, and that sounds great. Although, I do think that each schedule needs to have at least one larger break during the year for vacations. It would make learning more consistent and also lighten the workload of going to school so constantly for 9 months.

    • I agree, I think it would be a hard adjustment but I think I would get used to it. I think it would be good because then you do not get burnt out.
