Year Round School?

As I am slowly counting down the days to summer, I wonder what woud happen if we did not have summer. Personally, I would go insane. Many people believe that year-round school is like having no summer; you are just always at school. I found this not to be true, though, and to me, year-round school does not seem that bad.

In the school system, we have now we have about 78 days off from school. 60 are for summer vacation, 5 for spring break, 10 for winter break, and 3 for thanksgiving break; this does not include weekends. In year-round school, they have 30 days off for summer break, 15 days off for spring break, 15 days off for winter break, 3 days for Thanksgiving break, and 15 days for fall break. In total, they also have 78 days off from school, not including weekends.

There is a lot of controversy about this topic, though. Many people believe if you only give students 30 days off, they will not have time to go on vacation, go to camps, or get summer jobs. Some also say that too many breaks are not suitable for education. On the other hand, some people say there is still time to go on vacation or go to different camps. They also argue that having these different breaks is just what students need. It prevents the summer from getting long and tedious and makes sure students do not get burnt out in the winter. Year-round school also allows students to learn more because teachers do not have to spend as much time reviewing.

Since I am used to the schedule, we have now. I think it would be hard to switch to a whole new plan. I do see the benefits to year sound school. Usually, in the winter and fall, I am ready for school to be over, so I think having a break would be a great thing to look forward to. I do not know how sports would work with the breaks in the middle of the season.  I think I could get used to a year-round schedule, and I see it becoming more popular in the future.

How would you feel about having year round school?

Do you know anyone who goes to a year round school?

What do you think is the biggest positive and negitive to year round school?

    • I would hate to do online classes over the summer. I can't image getting out of school just to go right back on your computer. You are right though at least you would get done with school earlier.

  • It would definelty take some getting used to before I learn to enjoy it. No I do not, but I know people who get a whole week off for certain breaks and their summers are still as long as ours. I wish we had that. A positive would definetly be the short reveiw time although a negative would be not having a long summer break for jobs.

    • I agree, many people have summer jobs like working at the pool and many other jobs. I would miss the long summer.

  • I think that year-round school does have its perks. During the summer a lot of knowledge leaves your mind and it might be harder to understand something. I don't think that year-round school is good because when summer hits you can have a big street relief and you don't have to worry about school and you can have fun with your friends and not miss school to go on vacations.

  • Personally, I wouldn't like it. I like having a nice long summer break and not have larger breaks during school. But trying to be objective I can see the benefits of year round school not forgetting everything over summer and not having to go back over everything at the start of school.

    • I think it would be nice to have longer breaks throughout the school year, but I agree I like the long summer.

  • I think students need that giant break during the summer, the wheather is way to nice to be sitting inside of a useless building for eight hours straight. I understand why people would want to spread it out but I honestly just want to have the nice weather all to myself.

    • I agree, the wealther is so nice in the summer. I would hate to sit inside a school all day knowing how nice it is outside.

  • I don't think that we should have year-round school at all. There are some advantages such as getting more work done and having more time, but the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Kids would be less efficient with there work because they would just be worn out from not having a break.

    • I agree, we would get more work done because we would not have to much review, but I think I would miss the long summer.
