Year Round School?

As I am slowly counting down the days to summer, I wonder what woud happen if we did not have summer. Personally, I would go insane. Many people believe that year-round school is like having no summer; you are just always at school. I found this not to be true, though, and to me, year-round school does not seem that bad.

In the school system, we have now we have about 78 days off from school. 60 are for summer vacation, 5 for spring break, 10 for winter break, and 3 for thanksgiving break; this does not include weekends. In year-round school, they have 30 days off for summer break, 15 days off for spring break, 15 days off for winter break, 3 days for Thanksgiving break, and 15 days for fall break. In total, they also have 78 days off from school, not including weekends.

There is a lot of controversy about this topic, though. Many people believe if you only give students 30 days off, they will not have time to go on vacation, go to camps, or get summer jobs. Some also say that too many breaks are not suitable for education. On the other hand, some people say there is still time to go on vacation or go to different camps. They also argue that having these different breaks is just what students need. It prevents the summer from getting long and tedious and makes sure students do not get burnt out in the winter. Year-round school also allows students to learn more because teachers do not have to spend as much time reviewing.

Since I am used to the schedule, we have now. I think it would be hard to switch to a whole new plan. I do see the benefits to year sound school. Usually, in the winter and fall, I am ready for school to be over, so I think having a break would be a great thing to look forward to. I do not know how sports would work with the breaks in the middle of the season.  I think I could get used to a year-round schedule, and I see it becoming more popular in the future.

How would you feel about having year round school?

Do you know anyone who goes to a year round school?

What do you think is the biggest positive and negitive to year round school?

    • I agree, it seems to be way more spaced out and we would have more breaks giving our minds a rest from all the school. I would definitely miss summer break at the beginning but I think this schedule makes way more since. Once people get used to it I think it would be nice to have breaks in all seasons.

  • I would never want to do year-round school. Having those long breaks that the graphs show would be nice but going for 45 days straight is way too long our minds need a break. I don't know anyone who goes year around but it would be cool to hear their perspective of how it goes.

    • I agree that 45 days straight seems like a long time, but in our schedule we go to school for 70 days straight. I agree it would be cool to see what other people's perspectives would be on this topic.

  • I don't think I would like this schedule, I am already too used to the one I am currently on. At the same time I kind of like the idea of more breaks that are longer. I don't think it is a bad idea. I could enjoy a 15-day spring break. I could enjoy looking forward to that.

    • I agree, I feel like this schedule would be nice because we would have more breaks. I am use to this schedule though so I think I would miss having the long summer break.

  • I would go crazy being in school year round but if I were to do school fully online not going through a big school and having to zoom. Like if I were able to do class every other day I would be okay with it because I would still get the break and be able to finish it on my time, I do not personally know anyone who goes year round.

  • I think that year round school could have its benefits. Personally, I like the schedule we have now, but maybe it's because I'm used to it and don't want to change the routine. I do think more breaks throughout the school year would be nice, but I'd miss the long summers.

    • I think if I always went to a year round school then I wouldn't mind the year round school, but since I am use to this schedule I wouldn't like to change it.

  • I would not be a fan of all year round school. It would be a total adjustement that would take a bunch of time to get used too. I can't even convince myself to do homework now. If I knew Harlan was going to even think about doing year-round school...I would leave in an instant. Kids need breaks and the weekends go by so fast. Its our time to be stress free, and even still we get homework. The summer breaks are our time to live, and make memories. Everyone says to make the "most out of your highschool experience." How would you make memories and living with consistantly worrying about homework or always in school? It would raise depression rates and anxiety through the roof.

  • I feel like kids would be exhausted if they had year long school. KIdes need a break sometimes and the weekends would not be enough. They need something to look forward to when they are in school. I knew some people that like to do online school over the summer because they are that bored. The only positive to year round school is that it would be over sooner if the grades were the same classes.
