Summer school is a sponsored company by the school district that will provide lessons to students who are struggling, for credit and/or make up for lost credit. People who participate in summer school say they find it beneficial. Formally the typical day in summer school you would spend at max is 5 hours but times that by 5 days a week. It’s not as long or as tiring as a normal 8 hour school day.

Two governors, a national union leader,  and President Biden are supporting the idea of summer school: extended school year into the summer to help students make up for lost learning. Biden is expected to ask congress for $29 billion to fund summer school as a part of his pandemic stimulus package. They are saying by summer that most teachers are going to vaccinate and the warmer weather for going outside is going to be “safer” for in-person learning. Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia promoted the idea that schools should make summer school an option for families. Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers have offered similar things.

Personally, I think it is a good idea for some places that have done online all year, but for people who are in-person and have been most of the 2020-2021 school year should be able to have the normal time of a summer break. I wanna have fun as so do many people considering all the stress we have had this year. I do not think that summer school should be mandatory but should be a choice.

Would you participate in summer school if it were offered?

Should summer school be required?

  • Good topic choice and well done Cianan! The big issue is that you didn't reply to any student comments which is worth 30 poionts and your story is also two days late -20.

  • I would not participate in summer school and I doubt many people would. I think that kids need a break from school and from all the stress that comes with it. I also can't imagine going that long for school. I do not think that it should be required because many people would not go to it I promise. I would be one of those people.

  • I agree that summer choice should be a choice and not a requirement. As much as I wouldn't want to go to summer school I can see how it could be very beneficial. I think even going to school for a couple hours a day would be highly beneficial to some students.

  • I don't think there should be a summer school to make up school time that was lost because kids that would go wouldn't try because it would usually be their summer time when they are outside or at the pool with their friends. They wouldn't improve anyones knowledge on the different subjects either.

  • I don't think I would participate in summer school if it were offered. I think all students should get to take a break during summer. I don't think that summer school should be required, but it should be a choice for students that are struggling or need more work done over the summer.

  • I don't think I would go to summer school because it doesn't help you gradute any faster and if it did I might go. I think it would be a waste of time if you don't get the credits. Summer school should not be required unless there are students very far behind.

  • No I wouldn't. Summer is the time for me to finally relax and visit my dad and step mom. I don't think that schools should require summer school unless students are behind. I think that forcing students to go to summer school would cause a lot of stess and unwillingness to participate in anything. Students wouldn't want to go do things as much in the summer because they would be too busy with school.

  • I would probably participate in summer school, so I can catch up on homework from the actual school year, assuming it'll be the same teachers. Summer school should not be required, rather optional for the special needs students. If summer school was required, then there would be very many people protesting the event.

  • I wouldn't participate in summer school because I feel it is a waste of time. Students will already be burned out from the longer school year and won't want to learn more. Then, if they do participate they will have been going to school for two years straight. Summer school shouldn't be required unless some students are a lot farther behind.

  • I think for some people summer school would help for their learning. I personally would not participate in summer school because I don't feel i've lost a lot of learning this year besides the first couple weeks of school where we did the A and B days. I don't think it should be required to go to summer school because if you don't need it then why would you waste your time on something that you could go without.
