A Paris woman was locked in her own bathroom for three weeks before being freed by firemen.
The 69-year-old woman became trapped "in an absolute nightmare" after the lock broke off in her hand on 1 November.
She banged on the side of the wall of her flat with her shoe for days but the noise was ignored. So she lived off tap water and kept up her morale by taking showers and brushing her teeth.
The police were finally called when neighbours eventually became concerned nobody had seen her for three weeks.
The woman was undernourished but healthy and was recovering in hospital, police said.
An officer said: "She's a very popular lady but keeps herself to herself and people presumed she was on holiday.
"After knocking on the door we pressed our ears against it and heard her saying 'I'm trapped - please get me out'. If a neighbour had not called us then the result could have been fatal."
A friend said: "She was at her wit's end. Her flat is on the second floor and has no window so she couldn't call out.
"There was nothing she could do except bang on the wall at night. People moaned about the noise but they had no idea where it was coming from."
Now I'll be honest here... If you're going to get stuck somewhere... The bathroom would be the best place minus the fact you wouldn't have anything to eat. Or rather anything socially-acceptable to eat
