Winter Olympic Firsts

Halfway across the world, South Korea is preparing to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. This is only the second Olympics hosted in South Korea and will begin on February 9th this year and go until February 25th. Many athletes who have qualified for this Olympics have already began arriving in South Korea. Adding to this list, North Korean athletes have arrived. Surprising to many, there is a joint Korean team, with both North and South Korean girls creating a joint female hockey team. This is the first time in history that there has been a unified Korean team. Not only is there a first with the unified teams, but there are also new events this year. Adding to the list of winter sports, this year you will be able to see mass start speed skating, mixed doubles curling, big air snowboarding, and freestyle skiing.

Questions-

1) With the Olympics coming up, do you plan on watching the Winter Olympics? and What is your favorite sport to watch during the Winter Olympics?

Personally, I normally don't plan on watching the Olympics, but always end up watching a few things. My favorite sport to watch during the Winter Olympics is the Freestyle skiing. Freestyle skiing is my favorite especially because my cousin was the Gold Medalist at the previous Winter Olympic Games.

2) What sports would you like to see added to the Winter Olympics?

One sport that I think would be fun to watch during the Olympics is dog-sledding, and Snow-Volleyball!

3) Do you find North Korea joining with South Korea for an olympic team a big deal, or is it trivial and why do you think this?

I think that having a joint team for the Olympics is a huge step for North Korea, especially because originally there were no North Koreans that had the authorization to play in the games. I also think that it is a big step for this Country to unify themselves with South Korea and in general relate themselves with this country.

  • Well done Kelli!

  • I don't think I will watch all of the Olympics but I usually end up watching figure skating because of how amazing it is. I think that having the unified Korean team is a big team and seems like a huge step between the two countries.

  • 1) Yes I plan on wathcing the olympics and they are very fun to watch. I like to watch the skiing and the snowboarding.

2)I really think that they have all the sports covered.

3)I don't think that it is such a big deal they should just give it up.

    • I definitely agree with you when you say that most of the sports are covered. Especially during the winter Olympics, there is only so much that people can do with snow! The skiing and snowboarding is part of my favorites to watch! Who are you referring to "they" in the third portion of your answer? North Korea? South Korea? and why do you think that they should just give up?

  • I do plan on watching the Olympics I have been watching my favorite sport, which is speed skiing, since I was 8 years old. Honeslty right now they have all the sports I can think of that would belong in the Winter Olympics. I'm not to sure how I feel about have North Korea joining with South Korea. I think its good because North Korea is kind of on our planet again. I also am uneasy about it because North Korea is still North Korea and still under the same leader.

  • I do watch some of it if I'm super bored. Otherwise, no I don't usually watch it. I like watching gymnastics because its really neat and I'm also in tumbling. Dog-sledding would definately be cute. I also think that it is a good push for North and South Korea to be doing this. This would help them become more interacted with other parts of the world.

  • I have usually watched both Summer and Winter Olympics for as long as I can remember, so I am planning on watching. I like watching skiing and snowboarding the most during the olympics but I also like to watch bobsled. I think the sports the winter olympics have now are good, but there could be possibly more snowboard or ski events. North Korea and South Korea joining together could potentially be ahuge step toward North Korea maybe coming out of the shadows and joining the rest of the world instead of being secluded.

  • I don't usually watch the olympics, but when I have I usually only watch the skiing portion as well because although I am not big on sports, I do enjoy skiing. I am not sure what I would like to see added because I don't know what they have already. I do think it is a pretty big deal for North Korea and South Korea to be on a joined team.

  • 1. I normally don't usually watch the Olympics but I have watched them before and I feel like it was skiing because it looks cool and fun. It takes a lot of talent to be a skater.

    2. I don't really know, I am not a huge Olympic fan but I would have to say ice bowling that would be pretty cool.

    3. I don't feel like it is a big deal because it is a big step for North and South to join together.

  • I do sometimes when I was little I used to watch them with my grandparents. I dont really like anything in peticular because everything these players do they are good at. I think dog sledding would be cute and cool because we dont see it a lot anymore which is a shame. No I dont they both have Korea in there name so I see no problem.
