Will the Sumatran Tigers Go Extinct?

You may have heard of the Bengal tiger, well a Sumatran tiger is a cousin of this breed of tigers. In 1978, more than 1,000 Sumatran tigers lived in the country of Sumatra. But thanks to a high level of deforestation and poaching, only 400 or so of those tigers are left. According to the WWF, more than 40 Sumatran tigers are poached per year which may bring this tiger to extinction in as little as 10 years. The poaching of this tiger has become even easier as there is not a lot of tree cover to camouflage this animal. So what do you think, will this animal become extinct in the next ten years or will the Sumatran tigers live strong?

  • Good story but you quit repyling after the first day or two.

  • I hope they don't go extinct because they are cool animals. I think people should make more laws with worse punishments.

  • I think it would be completely possible for them to go extinct or survive. There have been some species of animals that had numbers lower than this and still survived.

  • That is so sad! :( I've never heard about this kind of tiger but I hope it doesn't go extinct.. I mean it wouldn't effect me at all but it would still be sad.

  • If they don't do something about the poaching and deforestation then they will go extinct. If they actually decided to do something about it they would not go extinct. Poaching, however, is a hard industry to stop unless you get on the inside and try to stop the black market trading.

    • I am 100% with you, I think if they decreas the number of people poaching and stop traffic from going through there and wiping out the trees, the may have a chance. But if they do not stop, they may go extinct.

  • I hope that they quickly find a way to stop this and they get the population up and the forest back up other wise we are going to lose them and then our kids won't know about this tiger

    • Yes, I'm not completely sure that the forest will grow back up quick enough cause it usually takes a long time for the trees to grow fully but if there are some trees that are in the process of growing tall, the tigers may have a chance to grow back.

  • If their protection is beefed up they might have a better chance, But if the people native to that country have hunted the tigers for food then they will most likely keep doing what they do.

    • I completely agree. It might cool down if they inflict more rules and keep a watch out for the tigers but it won't stop completely.
