Amelia Earhart was a pilot during the first 35 or so years of airplanes exsisting. She is famous because she attempted to fly across the Pacific. This was the mission that ended her piloting career and eventally her life. So little is known about her disapearance, but how would this have changed if she would have attempted to do this in 2019? Many things would be different due to the technology we have right at our disposal. This new technology includes GPS systems, which allow aircraft to be monitored for most of the time they are in the air. There are exceptions though. Over the ocean there are areas that are dead to radar contact, but in the next year or so many companies want to change this. By 2020 GPS (Global Posistioning System) would like to cover the entire earth. They didn't go into the details of this but it is known that many other navigation companies around the world are also looking to expand their covering area.

Questions-

1. Do you think this new technology will help rescue crews find lost planes and ships easier/faster? If so why?

My answer- I think this technology will most certainly help crews find airplanes and ships easier. As long as the plane/boat stays intact with the GPS locater it should allow almost every plane/boat to be found almost right after they go missing. This is simply because the rescue crews would be able to see almost the whole entire would, as oppose to just part of it.

2. Will this new technology allow airplanes to travel from point A to point B quicker? If so why?

My answer- I think it will because planes will be able to see dangerous weather on their GPS, and they will be able to go around it. I also think that in the near future these systems will show winds and wind speeds. If airplanes know this they would be able to go to a tailwind and thus travel faster and arrive sooner.

  • Good story choice and well done Trey!

  • I think that the new technology we have available to us present day would help rescue crews find lost planes and ships easier/faster because if it is true that the GPS's will cover the whole earth by 2020, then there would be no reason for them to delay they're rescue, resulting in a faster rescue. In all of the stories that I've heard regarding lost planes, it's usually because the plane flew into a terretory that was uncharted. If this variable was taken away, I believe the main problem would be exempt.

    • I agree with you. If we just covered the entire earth with GPS system then the number of lost planes and ships should go down dramatically. I believe that it might be hard to install GPS all over the world, but I think it is feasible.

  • I do think the new technology will help because it will make it way easier for both sides and they will spend less time looking for them. I think it will because they will be able to see the obsticals before hand and can avoid those parts all together.

    • I believe in that as well. This new technology would help a ton in finding lost airplanes and boats. Being able to see the weather many hours in advance would be almost as helpful as being able to speed an aircraft up. New technolgy that is capable of this will be very helpful and probably very expensive.

  • I think it would help find lost crew members and ships. Only if the gps did not get damaged. Which it very tricky becuase you never know what could happen, i do think it would be worth trying.

    • I also think it would help find lost planes and boats. It is normally rare that a GPS is damaged in a boat or plane accident. That sort of technology is built to withstand a lot of stress and force.

  • 1) Yes, I believe that this new technology will help resuce planes and ships. I believe that with all new the new technology that we already have, this will do just as well. I think that they will be able to find more ships now.

    2) I think so too. I believe that they will be able to, like you said, will be able to go around the weather that is bad. This will also help with ar saftey and getting rid of planes hitting other planes. I don't know if that has ever happened. I think planes will also be able to go faster after this because they won;t have to worry as much.

    • I agree with you, but I do think that it would be very helpful if we were able to create and use new and improved technology. I agree with you on the second question as well. This new technology should allow us to get from point A to point B quicker.

  • I think that its helpful that companies are trying to make air travel safer. Putting new technology to use like this will only help us later. Making aircrafts more capable and detectable in off-grid regions and harsh weather will reassure any uneasy passengers.
