Why is marine life leaving the equator?

The equator is known to have the most diverse population of marine life in the world. This includes coral reefs and large aggregations of tunas, sea turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks. Because of this, the marine population lowers as you head toward the poles. Ecologists have assumed this global pattern has remained stable over recent centuries until now.  A recent study found the ocean around the equator has already become too hot for many species to survive, and that global warming is responsible. This has caused marine life to go towards the poles. The same thing happened  252 million years ago, 90% of all marine species died. However, we shouldn't be surprised global biodiversity has responded so quickly to global warming. This has happened before, and with some serious consequences. At the end of the Permian geological period about 252 million years ago, global temperatures warmed by 10℃ over 30,000-60,000 years as a result of greenhouse gas emissions from volcano eruptions in Siberia. A 2020 study of the fossils from that time shows the pronounced peak in biodiversity at the equator flattened and spread. During this mammoth rearranging of global biodiversity, 90% of all marine species were killed. I feel that to help stop this we could try to make the switch from fossil fuels to alterinave energy, this might help with global warming.

  • I think that we should do something about this because we can't have all the animals move to the polls or die. That would lead to serius issues that we should fix now before it is too late. I think that we all need to do something about the global warming.

  • It annoys me slighlty when people say we shouldn't switch from fossil fuels because we rely on them, yet make no effort to subtely switch to different energy sources. If the issue is our reliance on fossil fuels, why don't we make a subtely change into alternative energy sources for different aspects of production and transportation to lower our carbon emissions while also becoming less reliant on fossil fuels. We're nearing a point of no-return for our planet, and we can't cling onto harmul fossil fuels just because we're used to them. Large-scale changes in our energy sources should have been made a long time ago.

  • I don't think that we could go away from using fossil fuels in our everday needs.  I think that alternative energy wouldn't be able to do half of the stuff that we when we have to use the fossil fuels and I think that it would take a long time to go away from fossil fuels.

  • I think that we should continue to keep an eye on this because it's a step down a very bad flight of stairs. but the earth has warmed and cooled before but I'm sure humans have sped up the warming. The two things I can think of to help stop this is like you said using fewer fossil fuels and keeping our forest which in turn will help absorb the greenhouse gasses and help slow the warming.

  • I think that we should maybe start looking into it because it is kind of concerning. but according to the paragraph, this same thing has happened in the past. It is scientifically proven that the earth goes through stages of being warmer and colder, but there is no doubt that humans have sped the process up.

  • I think that global warming is a huge factor like you said and humans are the ones behind it. There is countless things we can do to stop this. We can switch to electric cars, start using solar panals more, and many other things. We need to act fast before things get worse.

    • I agree. Also, I've heard that buying used cars can also be very beneficial to the environment. I think that fact is very helpful for people who are skeptical about electric cars so that they can help the environment while still not making a huge change immediately.

    • I agree. The worst part about the electric cars that they are producing now is that they are worse for the environment than cars that burn fossil fuels. We also rely on fossil fuels way too much to just stop right away, and they definitly have their places instead of electric vehicles.

      • I agree that there are too many things that we rely on with fossil fuels and I don't think that we could ever completely stop.  I think that the country couldnt go around like it does everyday without the fossil fuels we use on a daily basis.

  • Personally, I don't think that this is a very big deal. I mean like we could switch to alternative energy but we rely so much on fossil fuels that it would be almost impossible. I don't really think I could come up with many great ideas to prevent this because I really don't think it's that big of a deal.
