Why is China taking back pandas?

The United States first received a panda in 1972 as a gift from China. They did this to commemorate president Nixon’s visit to china and as a show of good faith. To the Chinese Pandas serve as symbols of friendship. Giving pandas as a gift was first started in 1941 by a Chinese diplomat. However China stopped giving pandas as gifts after 1982 and started loaning them to countries instead due to endangerment.

Every giant panda in the United States is on loan from the Chinese government.  Every zoo in the United states except for the atlanta zoo’s loan will expire in December of this year. There are four pandas, two adults and two babies that will remain in the Atlanta zoo until later, sometime in 2024. The terms for these loans are usually a 10 year or 15 year loan at one million dollars per year. When the loan period ends the pandas are set to return to China and become a part of breeding and conservation.

Although some believe China is taking the Giant Pandas back as a result of the rising tensions between them and the United States. Many know that this is the result of China's commitment to conservation of the Pandas. By bringing them back home China believes that they are better fit in their natural habitat compared to the look alike environments that are very captive in zoos. However many will be disappointed they will no longer be seeing the entertaining black and white pandas at the zoo. Although, this will result in Pandas being around for many more years to come in their natural habitat.

In my opinion it is going to be sad to see the Pandas leaving the country. Even though it is better for them to be in their natural habitat so they can live longer. I wish there was a natural habitat in the United States so they could stay but the only natural habitat in the world is in China. In conclusion it is a more mature decision for China to bring back their Pandas permanently to conserve and protect them.

Questions

1. Is it better for pandas to be in there natural habitat?

2. Do you think pandas will ever come back to the United States?

3. When do you think the pandas in Atlanta will return home?

    • I agree I think it is fair for China to take these pandas back because they are here on loan not permanently and China only wants whats best for them to keep them from going extinct.

  • I love pandas a lot, they are like my 3rd favorite animal. I would love to see them back in the wild so they can reproduce and grow in numbers. I hope to one day see that they are off the endangered species list. I beleive that humanity would lose out on a very special gift if pandas went extinct. I also think tnhat once their numbers are stable, China will send pandas once again into America. The pandas in Atlanta will most likely return some time next year.

    • I agree I love pandas and would love to see them be able to come back to the United States. I also hope one day they can be taken off the endangered species list too.

  • I believe that it would be better for pandas to be in their natural habitat, and not in zoo's where they are in captivity. Panda's have developed to their habitat in China, and it would be better for them to be in thier natural habitat that they have lived in for years. It will also be tough to have them in the natural habitat though, as they are an endangered species in the wild. They will still be in their natural living though.

    • I agree it is so much better for pandas in their natural habitat then being held captive in zoo's. It yes would also be tough to have them in their natural habitat since they are indangered species in the wild.

  • In my opinion, I believe that it is good for pandas to be in their natural habitat because pandas developed in China and it would be better for them their. However, if pandas are endangered, then I believe that captivity is necessary to keep the species from going extinct. This means that it wouldn't be very different where they're captive, because it still wouldn't be in their natural habitat. I hope that pandas will come back to the United States, but I doubt that it will happen any time soon.

    • I agree it is definently necessary to have the species go back to their natural habitat to keep them from going instinct so they can be around longer.

  • I think that it is better for pandas to be in their natural habitat. There will be less of a chance that pandas will die in their habitat because It has been something that they have been living in for many years. I think that eventually, pandas will be able to come back over to the United States. I am sure that the united states will find a way to mimic the ecosystem of the panda in order to host this amazing animal once again.

    • I strongly agree I think once pandas are in their natural habitat for awhile they will eventually find a way for them to come back to the US.

  • I think they should be brought back to their natural habitats. Given how endangered they are, any way to increase the likelihood that they will be around in the future is of the utmost importance.
