Who is Alexei Navalny and what happened to him?

Alexei Navalny is a Russian anti-coruption lawyer, and is also Putins biggest political rival.  He went to prision back in the end of Janurary for "violating his parole" of a 2014 trial.  Over 5,600 people were arrested for protesting his arrest.  Just recently the anti-coruption group that Navalny was the head of has been labeled a 'terrorist orginization on par with Al Qaeda' by the Kremlin (Russia's equivalent of a congress).  All of this is coming after Putin signed a law that could allow him to be president until 2036 which sounds a lot like the begginings of a dictatorship.

All of this dictator talk can also be shown with how they are treating Navalny in prision: his doctors arent allowed to see him, his lawyer isn't allowed to see him, and in fact almost no one can see him.  It has been reported by state doctors though that his health has been detiriorating, and in recent weeks his health has taken a complete nosedive.  Let me bring up the point that he was in exile in Germany when he was struck with some sort of rare poison that was efectivally a nerve gas.  People blamed this attack on Putin and the Russian government as an attempt to silence Putins main opposition.  Anyone even slightly assosciated with Navalny, even by way of donations or even social media, could get up to 10 years in jail.  people who say that Russia isn't a threat are kidding themselves: they have a large nuclear arsenal, are freinds with both India and China (two other countries with large nuclear arsenals), and a "president" who's on the way to becoming the next Stalin.  this is the beggining of our generations cold war.  I cant put this entire situation into one forum post, but I advise you to look up this entire situation.

Do you think we are on the way to having a second cold war?

Do you think Russia is on the way to becoming an authoritarian regime?

Should Russia face economic sanctions from the EU and UN?

  • I personally don't think this will lead to another cold war for many reasons. One reason I believe this is because it could cause an economic crash for Russia and lead to little or no trading for the country. Also, nowadays many countries only use nuclear warheads as defense weapons rather than offensive weapons which wouldn't give Russia much leverage on the USA if there was a cold war 2.

  • I hope that this doesn't lead to another cold war but I don't think it will. This is definitely an anti democratic and authoritarian thing to do. It is unjust, and honestly scary. Russia is in the top 3 countries in the world, and the fact that they are cruel and have a lot of power is pretty scary.

  • I don't know if there would be another cold war because I personally am hoping there wouldn't be a repeat in history like that. It would be very bad because Russia would have to be controlled by a leader which might then cause a "cold war" of some sort. Russia might be trying to bring up the past again, but I don't know for sure

  • I think that there might be a fight but I don't think that we will be in the fight. I think if there is going to be a fight then I think that it will be a small fight.  I think that Russia might become a authoritarian regime but I don't really think that they will. I think that Russia should face economic sanctions fro EU and UN, but I really don't know.

  • I don’t think that we are going to have another cold war. I think that the U.S. has everything under control and no war will start. I hope that if a war does start the United States isn’t going to be a big part of it. I think that it is a possibility that they will become an authoritarian regime. I think that Russia should try and figure out their problems on their own.

  • no, I think that we were not on the way to a second cold war. I don't think that they are on their way to becoming an authoritarian regime. I think Russia should definitely face sanctions, because of the way they acted during this. Russia needs to be put in check.

  • I don't think so because no countries want to get into nuclear warfare, its a lose lose situation. Not to mention, the US is the strongest country militairily, and we would desolate any country that wanted the smoke.  As for Russia, I don't know wether or not they are on their way to becoming an authoritairian regime.

  • No I don't think so because I think we handle things today very carefully and try to do anything possible to not get ourselfs into another war. I don't know maybe but I don't think they're on there way to that right know. No I don't think so becaue they shouldn't have to face what other countries are facing.

  • I don't think we would have the chance for a cold war. They could send nukes and kill us in a matter of minutes when being threatened. Russia is not heading in the right direction at all. They aren't a communist country since Putin has full control and can do whatever he wants. No one is equal in Russia, rendering communism completely useless. It's more of a dictatorship than anything else.
