Where Does Life Begin?

In 1976 NASA announced that there was life on Mars. This evidence was from a mederarite that contained microscopic evidence of fossil life. NASA also found small amounts of bacteria and then soon after classified the bacteria as “life on Mars”. This then brought out a question that still remains unanswered, scientifically and opinion based. The question is. “If bacteria on Mars is considered life, then is an unborn fetus considered a life?”

Three years before life was found on Mars, abortions were made legal in the U.S. This caused an outrage between religious, non religious people and between the two main political parties. By legalizing aboritons many people thought it meant that the government didn’t consider an unborn fetus life, up until 24 weeks of pregnancy. 24 weeks of pregnancy was the average cut off for wanted abortions unless the pregnancy was causing harm to the mother. Therefore, many people believed that life no longer started at conception, but after 24 weeks of pregnancy or birth of the fetus.

But this summer, Roe v Wade was overturned causing the legalization of abortions to be decided depending on what your state decides. For the states that chose to not have abortion legalized, it left the women of the state hard decisions to make. In some cases, having an aboirtion in a state that it is not legalized in, could lead to certain charges against you and can even be charged up to murder.

In my opinion, I believe that life does start at conception. I believe this not because of my religion or political view, but because of science. But I also do believe that it is a women's right to choose if they would like to carry that pregnancy full term depending on the risks of the mother's health.

  • Overall, good job Izzy! I do think your summary is a bit brief and especially your opinions could be expanded upon. I also think your second question is a bit confusing. As far as comments go, you did all you could. Not sure why so few people commented.

  • I don't really believe life on mars could be considered life on earth. When it comes to life on other planets we don't decide if it is life by earth's standards, so I don't think this would be a very good excuse to use if you want to talk about abortion. I don't think I have a specific idea of when life starts so I would need to educate myself on this, but I don't think we should discuss if the fetus could be considered life, and more if the mother can and wants to have the kid.

    • I agree with you in some ways, one of those is Mars compaired to Earth. I do understand how life on Mars can't be exactly the same as life on Earth. But I do know that they both should have the same logic and basic standards. Although I do respect your opinion, I still do strongly believe that conception and or life starts when the sperm first meets the egg.

  • I believe that life starts as a undborn fetus in the worm because everybody says there is life on mars when there is only bacteria. I agree with you that life starts at conception and if you decide to have an abortion as a form of birth control then it should be defined as murder.

  • I belive that life does start as an unborn fetus in the womb. I also do think that the bacteria on mars should be consitered life becuase aborted babys also have a life, and if they do not count the bacteria as a life then counting the unborn baby as no life would be unfair. I agree with you and I do think that life starts at conception and that abortions are no good. I also agree on you with the mother should have a choice on abortion if she is unhealthy and the baby is still a fetus.

    • I agree with you because these are all simpy not just opinions but facts. They are all science based and all agree with science. When sperm meets the egg it fertilizes and then starts the process of forming the fetus. That isn't an opinion, it's a scientific fact that has been proven. So, yes I agree with you and also do believe that what is considered life on another planet, should also be considered life on a different planet.
