What gets you farther in life?

Over the years many things have changed in the united states. Not only is there different lines of work, but different sources of education. There has always been a long dispute over "what you know, or who you know". Now a days there is controversy over this topic. Does knowing your stuff get you farther in life? Or do connections to people do? There are many different ways of thinking about this. You could have no connections and be a straight A student, and apply to a job. Or you could be a B student, but your dads friend works there.

Who gets the job? Why do they get the job? Is this an okay factor in day to day life?
