What Exactly Is Violence?

What is considered violence?

When looking into many different things can be considered violence. Do you throw something against a wall and it doesn't break, is that considered violence? What if it does break? Then it is considered violence. When you harm someone is that considered violence? I think that all of these examples can be considered violence. When looking at aggravated assault, as an estimated number from 2019, there were over 385,280 arrests alone, 2/3 were from white people, and a little under 1/3 were from blacks. People say that more black people are arrested. But when looking at these numbers I see them differently.

When causing harm to someone, I consider this to be harmful, whether it is physical abuse or sexual abuse. Many women in Ukraine are being sexually abused by Russian soldiers one woman stated "instead of getting first aid kits, when I heard the first spellings, I brought condoms and  scissors to protect myself, my mom thought I was crazy, said I was acting like a 1980s war movie, but who is acting now?" This is violence, it doesn't matter how you are violent to a person.

If you are sober and throw something at a child, this is violent. If you are not sober and throw something at a child this is still violent. You were the one making that decision and you were the one who needs consequences.

Have you ever seen someone being violent in a public setting?

How would you calm down a person being violent?

What do you consider to be violent?

  • I like the topic and it hasn't been doen before so +5.  Your summary is brief overall with such a interesting topic. What do experts/research say about violence?

  • Personally, I have seen and been around when something violent broke out. I think that if someone is being physically violent it wouldn't be smart for someone my size to try and step in so I would ask around for help or call 911. I think violent is when someone acts out agressively because of a strong emotion.

  • I have seen people be violent on many occasions because, unfortunately, it is a common occurrence in our country. If someone was being violent I would not calm them down. That is not my job so I would simply run away and call 911. I consider any sort of abuse to be violent because that's what violence is.

  • I consider anything that causes hurt or physical damage to someone as violence. Personally I have never seen someone being violent in a public setting, and I'm not sure what I would do in that situation. I feel like the best thing to do is to just give the person being violent space.

  • I haven't really seen anything violent on the streets. I would just leave the person be unless they were mad at me and were trying to be violent to me. I consider violent to be physically harming someone. (Could be themselves)

    • Yes, violence can be physical, but it could also be mental. It's not an everyday thing to see violence on the streets, let alone for someone to be violent towards you when on the streets.

  • I consider violence to be physically harming someone or something. Someone who is being extremely violent probably cannot be calmed down easily and would have to remove themselves or be removed from the situation. I personally have seen violence in public, I think everyone has.

    • Most people have seen violence in public. There are some, however, who haven't experienced it in a public area.

  • I think that violence can be considered many things, especially what was stated above. I have seen many people be violent in a public setting. personally, I wouldn't try to calm them down in a public setting, I would call the cops, but I would tell them to go to a different room and calm down.

    • This would be a great idea, only if the one being violent doesn't turn on you. If the person being violet turns and tries harming you then there would be no other choice but to call the police.
