As you know, multiple stores are now using self check-out stations. You see them everytime you walk into a grocery store. Many people have different opinions on self check-out stations. CNN gives us pros and cons on why people think they may or maynot be good.
Pros:
People think that it's faster than human cashier. Some stores also see themselves as being competitive with other stores. People want to shop at the better stores. According the CNN, the pandemic also changed the way people shop because it made it so you wouldn't have to be around other people. After the pandemic it was harder for stores to find people that want to work as cashiers.
Cons:
CNN states, "According to a survey last year of 1,000 shoppers, 67% said they’d experienced a failure at the self-checkout lane." That is over half of the people that have problems or errors when checking-out. After this many years you think they would have it figur out. According to CNN, self check-out have less security than human check-outs. Which means the stores have more shoplifters and the store loses money. Also, the machines are expensive to install and keep them working. Self check-out machines have been since the early 1900's. The purpose was to lower the prices of what was on the shelf, because they didn't have to pay for someone else to check them out (CNN Business). "The system reduced cashier costs by as much as 66%, according to a 1988 article in the Miami Herald.", states CNN.
I'm against self check-out stations, because if I was in a rush to get somewhere and one of the items didn't ring up, I may not know. Then when I walked through the sensors, they would start beepingI, and could be accused of shoplifting. Also, it takes away jobs from people who may need the money.
Questions
Is it easier for people to shop-lift?
Is it putting a dent in the number of jobs out there for people?

In my opinion, self-check-outs are a good thing because you can usually buy your things much faster. This is because most people get in line for an employee to do it for them, but if you are in a rush, they can be much better. They are also almost never closed, unlike stores where lines may be closed. I feel that it could make the number of jobs lower, but stores still need employees to run the store and make sure nobody is stealing things.
I think that it is easier for people to shoplift because there is not someone watching you, it is machine that probably won't notice and it is only recording you. I think that most people prefer them because it is easier and faster in some ways. I do think that it is putting a dent in the number of jobs for people because some stores aren't hiring cashiers because people can self checkout now.
I think that many stores are realizing how much shop lifting is going on, now that they use the self check out lanes. It makes sense that people would rather use them, because it is usually much faster. But, people do shoplift more.
I think both of them are good but I dont think its easier to shop lift in the self chek out line, But it kinda takes away from the jobs people could have but theirs self check out machines.
I think they are both good options for checking out at a store but if I had a preference it would be self-check-out. In my opinion, it's faster and you can make the easier decision to have a bag or not.
I personally don't mind them looking past cons, but I don't like how they are taking jobs away from people. AI has seemed to have an uprising over the past few years and more people will lose jobs. I also don't like it since Fareway put them in and I know a lot of people go there as a first job.
I think that with the self checkout being more common in stores people find it easier to sneak and steal items from the store without the employes noticeing.I belive that slef checkouts are a very lagre negative for stores and the people that work in them.
I would say that people who are going to shop-lift with shop lift regardless of if there is self check out or not. No matter what you are always going to have people like that. But in regards to getting rid of jobs for people. I think it is definitely taking jobs away but this just helps the business thrive more because they don't have to pay as many employees.
I think that having self checkout lanes makes it far easier to shoplift items from a store. If you dont check your item it does not know if you just took it. Also having self checkouts talkes away some potential jobs. Though you need a supervisor for these checkouts, there is less manuel labor being done.
I can see it being easier for people to shop-lift with self-checkout stations, most of the time there is usually not anyone checking around the self-check-outs. I do think that self-check-out stations are creating fewer jobs out there for people who need them.
