Weekend Sleep-in's Might Ruin Your Waistline

A new study says that sleeping in during the weekend may not be the solution to recover your body from the hours of sleep lost during the week. "The bottom line of this study is that even if you sleep longer on weekends, if you continue to sleep poorly, you will still eat too much, and you will still gain weight." says Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky, director of sleep research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They made a study with 36 young healthy men and women. The first group got to sleep 9 hours for 10 days. The second group slept a total of 5 hours, the third got 5 hours of sleep Monday through Friday and were allowed to sleep in during the weekend. The sleep-deprived men increased 2.8% in their weight, while women's body size went up by 1.1%. Men who slept in on the weekend showed a 3% increase in weight and the women's body size went up 0.05%.

As a teen who either sleeps in, gets enough hours of sleep, or doesnt get enough sleep, do you think your sleeping schedule affects your physical health and mental health?

I think it does because if you dont get enough sleep you'll be too tired to be focused and you wont feel as good as when you get the recomended amount of sleep.

Do you or would you do anything to help you get better sleep?

I feel like I can do a better job of getting sleep because I am one of those students who sleeps like 3 hours a day, I would try to keep my schedule balanced and not procrastinate so I dont do everything last minute and cram everything the day before.

  • Good story choice but be sure to reply more frequently.

  • I go to sleep at a pretty decent time and wake up pretty early in the morning. I think that this could be the reason many kids have health issues in different aspects. I think I could do a lot to help me get more sleep, but will probably no do it.

  • Sleep schedule definitely affects people's physical and mental health. I know that when I don't get a lot of sleep I always have a hard time concentrating on certain things. I would like to do something about my sleep schedule, but with the combination of homework and work I don't get to bed until 12 most nights.

  • I think that sleep defiently messes up my mental health because if you become sleep deprived your brain starts to do really crazy things because it hasn't been able to rest it like it used to. I feel like I could do things to better my sleep schedule because I don't have the best one right now.

  • I don't know what you could do to get better sleep besides making yourself get more sleep. I guess you could set and alarm of a timer so you know when you need to go to sleep. IF you make sure your on time with everything then you should definitely be able to make sure your asleep on time.

  • I definately think that sleep effects your mental and physical condition. Speaking from personal expierence when I dont get enough sleep I can't focus as well in class and overall just feel like "dead." I try to get more sleep now that I have seen how much it can effect my mental state at school, but I think I can do better than what I am doing right now.

    • I agree if I don't get enough sleep I don't do as well in daily activites such as school or work. I also agree with the not getting enough sleep to where I just feel dead and not want to do anything.

  • I do, If you dnot sleep well or at all you will be sluggish and not try the next day at school, you could also be very grouchy and rude to your friends then their rude back and its just a sucky day. On the other hand if you get enough sleep you will make up feeling and looking alive.

  • Nah I'm just going to sleep cuz I've been doing fine up to this point so might as well keep sleeping how I do. Maybe as I get older I'll start thinking about it more but as of now, I'll be just fine.

  • I don't care what any study says I'm sleeping as long as I wan't on the weekends. My body and brain will be fine I'm a big boy. Plus getting enough sleep on the weekend tells me my whole mood for the day so imma sleep.
