- America feared a communist attack (Red Scare) and USSR's fear of a US attack
East: communistic countries; west: capitalism, democracy
Goals United States:
- Stop to spread communism
- Policy of Containment
- Promote democracy throughout the world, especially in Asia and Africa
- Wanted to promote open markets for US good to prevent another depression
Goals USSR:
- Spread Communism
- Wanted to create greater security for itself
- Encourage friendly governments on its borders
- Established defensible borders
- -> wanted communism and their view in countries around them

Term presentation:
- Domino Theory: If Communists control one nation the rest of the world will soon follow (in early 1950's)
- Policy of Containment: A policy that was issued to prevent the spread of communism in 1947
- Truman Doctrine: (Example of containment) The Truman Doctrine stated that the US would help countries in Europa (Greece and Turkey) with military and economic aid if they were threatened by communism in 1947
- Marshall Plan 1948-52: After World War II the US helped rebuild and gave European countries economic support
- Brinkmanship: The pushing a dangerous situation to the brink of disaster without going into the issue
- Mutual Assured Destruction 1955 and 1960's: Using string weapons to create ab explosion to destroy opposing sides
- Massive Retaliation/Mutual Deterrence: US and USSR create massive weapons, but both now, that if one drop one the whole world is going to be destroyed. Nuclear weapons are used to threat another country or to protect themselves
- NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization April) 1949: Military alliance formed between 28 nations to enforce North Atlantic Treaty to try to stop communism and help/fight against USSR; United States, GB, Canada, West Germany, France, Turkey
- Warsaw Pact in 1955: An alliance between the Soviet Union and most Eastern European countries to counterbalance the alliance called NATO; dissolve in 1991

- KGB: Soviet Union military service; the CIA of the Soviet Union
- Desalinization after 1956: The act of eradicating traces of Stalin from the Russian government; a political reform after the death of Josef Stalin
- Detente in 1970's: A french word meaning release from tension usually in political situation
- Perestroika in 1980's: The fixing or stabilizing the economic and political system; Gorbachev wanted to change it; be more open for people and economy
- Glasnost in 1985: Openness, no secretive anymore; describes the policy for Mikhail Gorbachev premiere of the former soviet union

- US, Russia, UK, France and China: five countries which have nuclear weapons
