Finally! 2021! No longer are we living in 2020. I’m sure everyone took a deep breath and is excited for this new year. Who wouldn’t be? After all, 2020 was the worst year ever, right? I do not believe 2020 was the worst year ever. I believe it’s far from it because many of the events that happened last year have happened all over the world in many years before. Global pandemics, protests, deaths, wildfires, just to name a few. However, I do hope last year will be the worst one pur generation has because I do not want anything worse to happen again.
We all obviously know the highlight of 2020 is COVID 19, but if we look back there’s been many more pandemics far worse than COVID. During the late 1340’s and early 1350’s, the Black Death plague wiped out a whopping third of the world’s population. COVID isn’t even at 2 million. Of course, the death count is 2 million too much, but it’s not a third. About 800 years before the Black Death plague was the Bubonic plague killing over 50 million people. There’s been many more viruses such as smallpox and measles that got brought to the Caribbean from spanish invaders. Up to 90% of the natives living there died from those viruses. There’s many more, but those pandemics stood out the most.
Recently our nation has been divided because of different beliefs such as the government and equality. On the 6th of January, as many of you heard, a large group of people stormed the capital building while a trial was taking place. In May, there were many protests about the death of George Floyd. Not to mention the threats of riots and protests depending on who won the presidency. Our country is close to being as divided as they were before the Civil War. There’s basically only two sides and people get attacked for being on one side or the other. In 1919, the Red Summer was a deadly and scary time for people of color. Colored neighborhoods were burnt down and they were left homeless. Police brutality was at its top. Worse than 2020 because no one was doing anything about until the NAACP was created. Though it wasn’t perfect and everyone was happy, the brutality decreased.
The deaths of well known celebrities have also devastated our country. To name a few Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Pop Smoke, Kenny Rogers, Adam Scelsinger, Naya Rivera, Chadwick Boseman, and Alex Trebek. These celebrities, and many more, have had a huge impact on all of our lives. It is still hard to believe that they are truly gone. Every year many people die. It’s inevitable and last year just happened to have a lot.
Obviously 2020 was not a good year, but so many families have gotten closer because of how much time they spent with each other. I know my family did, and we redid a lot of rooms in our house, and we had fun doing it. I am also glad I had my sports seasons. Many different schools weren't able to have any sports. Without them, I would have been very bored and would have got lazy.
Even though this year wasn’t great, we need to look back and find the positives and not just focus on the negative. Let’s hope 2021 will be better than 2020. The bar is set pretty low, so I think it has a good chance.
Do you think 2020 was the worst year ever? Why or why not?
What celebrity were you most sad to hear about?
What were some highlights to your life in 2020?

Interesting topic choice and very well done Aurora!
I wouldn't say that 2020 was the worst year ever but I believe that on many aspects it wasn't great, because of covid I often felt like I was missing things and experiences, especially because in Italy we hade more restrictive measurements and they lasted more than here (my friends haven't been in school for like three months and they can't do many things out of the house). At the same time having to stay at home made me spend more time with my sisters and my family and that was something I wasn't used to but turned out to be nice.
I don't know if it was the worst year ever, but I think that it is a really bad year. I was most sad to hear that Kobe Bryant cashed in a helicopter because he was such an influence to many people. I don't think I had too many highlights in 2020 because it wasn't the greatest year.
2020 was not the worst year ever. Although it was the worst year that many alive today have every experienced. I think this is so because many were forced to be alone or more alone then they'd been for a long while, which leads to no mental recharge and depression. It was also just something that followed you around. There's just about no way to get the occurences out of your head. You go on your phone and see a reminder to have small social gatherings and wear a mask. You turn on the TV and see the horrible division today's society is plagued with. You go out to only see every face covered. There's literally a constant reminder. And although we have many deaths every year, this year was especially bad. Not even just talking of celebrities. There are always highlights though. In my case my family finally found a home and my dad got a large promotion at a job he loves.
I do think that 2020 was the worst year too, I mean Covid has been around for a long time but this is a different type of Covid that is happening right now and its new. Its sad that things had to close down and that people are having to social distance, even when we have to wear masks. Even though people and myself don't like wearing one its better than safe than sorry from spreading it and getting more people sick. Lots of people have died from it this year and that sucks and it makes me sad too. At least we finally got a vaccine for it and thats good but its going to take awhile for it to get to everyone. But something postive I got out of 2020 is that I got to see my friends and I got to reunite with my boyfriend in July ever since I didn't see him since March when the pandemic started. Even though its been a crazy year all of humans fought through it together and thats what makes us strong
I definitely think that 2020 wasn't the worst year. There have been world wars and other more devistating pandemics than COVID 19. I probably most sad to hear about Alex Trebek's death because mine and my dads favorite show to watch every summer I go is Jeopardy. We love it so much me and my stepmom wanted him to take the test and go on the show. I think some of the highlights would be going to see my dad and step mom in Washington. Finding out I'm going to be a big sister again and getting a better relationship with my mom. This year over all has helped me develop my style and the things that I like. It also helped me gain better relationships with all of my family.
2020 may not be the worst year ever, but I think it is the worst year in recent history. Some people's lives have been completely ruined by this year. It also doesn't help that riots were going on all throughout summer, Australia starting on fire, and the Murder Hornets that were invading places at the beggining of the year.
I don't think 2020 was the worst year but it definitely wasn't the best. Quarantine was kind of a nice break from everything, but summer was kind of ruined and when it was time to come back to school it sucked. I really didn't have any highlights of 2020.
I think 2020 was one of the worst years ever with all the deaths and the pandemic. There might be a couple years worse, but from our time this can easily be the worst year. Deaths of many celebrites have hurt us quite a bit, but also a world pandemic has happened and forced us to stay inside and wear masks.
I don't think 2020 was the worst year ever but, I don't think it was too far off from it. I was probably most sad to hear about Deigo Maradona or Kobe Bryant. Some highlights were just hanging with my friends. Going to the dome in football, and getting out of school in March.
