Video Released After jury Acquits Ex-cop of Murder

New body footage was released last week.  It captures the tense moments before an Arizona police officer shot and killed an unarmed man last year, as the man begged officers not to fire. During Officer Philip Brailsford's trial, Brailsford testified saying that Daniel Shaver was reaching for a gun in his waistband as he was approaching the officers. Officer Brailsford then plead as innocent, although no weapon was found. When interviewed recently, Brailsford and his lawyer state that '[Brailsfords] actions were consistent with his police training."  Daniel Shaver's intoxication level was a 30, and its unknown as to why he was reaching in his pocket.

Questions:

1. Why do you think the video footage was just released?

2. Why was Daniel Shaver reaching for his back pocket?

3. How would you react if you were an officer from the Arizona department?

I am not sure why the video footage was just released. I think everyone just believed the officer and didn't feel the need to check body cam footage.  I think Daniel Shaver was too intoxicated to listen to instructions and I'm sure he couldn't keep his balance either. I wouldn't shoot Daniel right away, I would approach him slowly and handle the situation carefully. I would feel very bad for one of officers because he had to take a life and is now no longer an officer.

  • because of privacy laws or something like that and to get justice because it he was trying to tell them that he was ok and wasnt armed i would feel discrase becuase they shouldn't accuse of anything that could be

  • I have no clue to why the video footage was just released, but I think everyone assumed an officer would tell the truth and didn't need to check the footage. I'm assuming the victim was too intoxicated to follow instructions and keep his balance. If I was the officer, I would not have shot him. I would handle the situation with carefulness.

  • Because I think that we just found it out and it's finally something that is important. I think he was to drunk to listen to what the officer was saying because if you are drunk your senses and movements are dulled so it's harder to focus. I would think why would someone shoot someone if they are pleading to live and they are not doing anything to endanger you.

  • Because they thought justice must be shown in this case because I seen the video and I think it was cruel and the guy fell while crawling to them and that's when they fired at him. He fell while crawling because the police made him crawl to them or they will shoot at him then he fell and got shot. I don't trust this guy with a gun or rifle he should be a meter maid or depart his rank or fire him.

  • I think the video footage was released to show everyone what really happen. Since the man was intoxicated, it's hard to tell why he was reaching for his back pocket. If I was an officer from the Arizona department, I would feel bad for the officer who had to shoot someone and lose his job.

  • I think because at the time of the murder it would have been really hard on the family to have seen that footage. I don't know why he was reaching for his back pocket but he should have just listened to the officer. I think I would support my officer but only if he followed the correct protocol.

  • I think the video was just now released because maybe the cops did not want to release it. I think that maybe he did not listen to the instructions and did it anyways. I would watch the video and decide if he did the right thing, if the officer told him not to reach in his pocket and he did then he might of deserved to get shot.

  • I think that they were probably reviewing the footage for a while then after reviewing it, it was shown to the public. I believe that since he was drunk then he probably wasn't fully listening to the cop all the way. If I were an officer then I would probably hope for justice, no matter what it may be.

  • I feel like they may have been trying to cover up for the guy because why wouldn't they release when it happened. Since he was drunk he probably wasn't able to make a good decision. Well I'd grieve for the family of Daniel Shaver and the cop that shot him because no one wants to do that to someone.

  • It was probably released to show the people what actually happened that night and how the police officer saw it from his point of view as a police officer that is supposed to protect our city or towns.
