On Monday night, 21year old Lauren McCluskey, a University of Utah track althete was shot and killed. She was found dead in a parked car near campus. The suspect who killed her was found dead at an off campus location a short time after. "Several members of our university administration spoke with Lauren's family last night and I have also reached out to them. Her family is understandably in shock at this news about their daughter. They are heartbroken. We have and continue to offer our full support to them at this terrible time," said Ruth V. Watkins, Preident of Utah. All classes on Tuesday were cancelled. "A vigil for McCluskey is being planned for Wednesday evening at the Park Building on campus," stated abc news. The suspect, 37 year old Melvin Rowland, was identified after reports of the shooting were made. He was reistered as a sex offender and was convicted for "forcible sexual abuse" and alluring a minor, both felonies, in 2004.

Well, it sounded like they knew each other. You can prevent these situations by checking in with people or telling them where you are. I think the school should just stay back and let the family heal.
I think that the school should make it clear to everyone that this incident has not gone unnoticed. The school should make sure that their security is up to date and implement any other safety procedures that they think are necessary. There should be a memorial or some kind of service for the girl to honor her memory.
I think that if schools had tighter security these attacks wouldn't happen, but I also think that it is important to be aware of whats around you and always be careful. I think the school should inprove its security and also make sure this never happens again.

People could prevent these things in multiple ways. Dont go outside your campus or dorm without a friend. Always be aware of what is going on around you. Also carry some sort of defense weapon at all times. I think the school will also improve their security and try to keep all the students safe.
People need to be very aware where they are. I also think espcially being a college student someone should be with you. Should be safe and maybe not go out when it's too dark. All schools should have better security. There's a lot of people who are bad out there, but try to be safe.

I think people being aware of their surroundings is very important when it comes to things like this but things like this can happen anywhere at any time. You just don't really know how to fully prevent it. I think not only should the school have better security but also let their students know about things like this and maybe give them helpful tips to keeping theirselves safe around the campus.
It's really hard to prevent someone from shooting you, but if you suspected someone was trying to hurt you, you could try to run away quickly and also call 911 so they could hopefully make it to your location before anything bad happened. The school could inform students of how to be aware of their surroundings. It's hard for the school to do much more than that in this case since she was found dead near campus, not on campus.
