US Suicide Rates Up

The suicide rates in the US are going up for ages 10-74, and have been since 1999. In 1999, 10.5 out of every 100,000 person committed suicide...by 2014, the number had raised to 13. Statisticians say that this problem could be hard to fix because it has spread through many different types and groups of people. Between 1999 and 2006, the rates went up by one percent each year, but from 2006-2014, the rates rose by two percent each year. Because of this, people are worried that the rates will continue to go up. Read the article here.

My thoughts: I think that suicide is a really big issue in our generation and it will continue to worsen if something isn't done to stop it.

1. Do you think suicide is a big problem in our generation?

2. Do you think suicide rates will continue to go up if something isn't done?

  • Good job!

  • I don't think it is a huge problem in our generation. It has happened but not much around here.

I think it is possible that the rates could go up. I know that some schools are already trying to do something and prevent kids from suicide. Rates could go up no matter what. People might attempt but we want to try and catch it earlier before they attempt to.

  • Suicide is probable one of the biggest issues for our generation people can't handle the stress they are put under. Yes when need to try what ever we can to stop people from committing suicides.

  • I think suicide is a huge problem in the U.S and would be very hard to stop. Honestly I think suicide is impossible to stop. Which is very sad.

  • I do believe suicide is a huge problem is our generation, but I don't see how we can stop it because everyone does it for different reasons.

    • I agree! It's really hard to know where to even begin to try to stop it because so many different types of people do it for so many different reasons!

  • I think it is a problem but I don't see what can really be done to stop it. People commit suicide for several reasons, one being bullying and to stop those people from killing themselves we would have to stop bullying. I just don't see a solution.

  • I think suicide is a big problem in our generation. Unfortunately, I am sure they will continue to go up. Often, people that are suicidal do not talk to the right people about their problems. Therefore, they do not get any help. Hopefully something major can happen to turn this issue around.

    • I agree! They need to go to people who actually care about their problems enough to help them/get them help, and when they go to someone who doesn't seem to care it probably makes their condition even worse! Hopefully something is done to help get rid of this problem!

  • I think that suicide is a very big issue in our generation and could get worse if people dont get help. I also believe that the rates will go up and just continue to rise.
