CDC reported on Friday that suicides have increased in the US to a rate of 13 per 100,000 people, the highest since 1986. Meanwhile, homicides and deaths from illnesses like cancer and heart disease have declined. In the past, suicides have been most common among white people. The overall suicide rate rose by 24% from 1999 to 2014, according to the CDC. However, the rate increased 43% among white men ages 45 to 64 and 63% for women in the same age-range. In 2014, more than 14,000 middle-aged white people killed themselves. That figure is double the combined suicides total for all blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and Alaska Natives. The suicide rate declined for only two groups: black men and all people over 75.
1. Why do you think middle aged white people have a higher percentage?
2. Why has suicides increased, while homicides and deaths from cancers decreased?
My opinion: I think that it is middle aged white people, because they are more dangerous, careless(drinking and driving). and have become more stressed and depressed. I think suicides increased, while homicides and deaths from cancers decreased is because it is a lot easier to get depressed than to be killed or get a cancer.

Good but be sure to comment throughout the week and not just on one day. Be sure to link to the story your discussing.
Middle aged white people are probably going through a lot of stress causing them to be more on edge. Suicide has nothing to do with those suicide is caused by depression or something that puts them on edge.
I think that people are just too stressed nowadays. I also think that financial and job issues can lead to more stress and more problems. Middle-aged people are most likely to experience these types of problems. I also think that mental health issues are more prominent in today's society.
I think that homicides have decreased due to the fact that people are too busy trying to solve their own problems, rather than creating more. I definitely think that the improvements in technology have helped to provide better information and knowledge about cancer, decreasing the deaths that it results in.
I think that these middle aged white people might be going through big problems and they overreact and then they think that the only solution is to kill themselves. These people are past when they were young so they have been through a lot and can be overwhelmed.
I think they have increased because these are single people acting upon themselves and people don't notice the struggles and they just kind of brush other peoples problems off. Homicides have decreased probably because of the law catching more people and the signs of potential homicides earlier. Cancer has decreased probably because of the better medicines and health care that is being given to people with cancer.
I totally agree. Couples break up and then one doesn't feel cared about. Also they could be going through debt problems. So they take the easy way out and don't think of the family and the people that actually care about them.
Because most likely they are in college or they just graduated college and they have a lot to pay off money wise. It is hard to say why suicides have increased, but a reason could be because more and more people are getting stressed out.
I feel like the middle aged white people may have higher rates because they are getting divorces and things, maybe their kids are going to college and they are having financial problems, maybe they just can't support their family.
I think that middle-aged people are more likely to have a higher percentage because they could be going through problems with there family or financially. Not sure on why the homicide deaths have decreased.
Yes, I agree that people go through more stress during their middle ages than any other time. Depression(suicides) kills more people than aggression(homicides).
I think middle-aged people are more likely to commit suicide because they may be under financial stress, going through a divorce, or something else of the sort. I think the "mid-life crisis" everyone speaks of may also play a factor in the suicide rates increasing.
I'm not sure why homicide deaths have decreased, but as far as cancer goes, I think more people are working better and harder to prevent and treat the illness.
