Universal Basic Income

A citizen's income, or a universal basic income is a government-guaranteed payment that each citizen receives. There are multiple pros and cons based on your opinion. The pros are that it would completely destroy poverty and help millions of families pay their bills or buy food for that month. Workers could wait for better jobs to come up, whether than starting one right away that might not have the best income. People wouldn't have to worry about taking care of family issues instead of working. With this money, new couples could start a family with the confidence that they need. Many countries with falling birth rates would have the extra help to raise those numbers.

However, there are many cons to this. Inflation could be set off, due to the demands of items, such as goods and services. There would not be many houses available due to the inflations of prices. With money from the government, workers would see work as optional, creating more unemployed workers. Again, due to inflation, these small payments won't really make a difference for those in poverty. So what do you think? Should we have Universal Basic Income?

1) Should we have Universal Basic Income? Why?/Why not?

2) How do you think it will affect people in the United States?

  • I think that universal income is not a good idea. I think that the people that just choose not to get a job will just think, “Oh I can just get money from the government and I don’t have to work.” Of course I like the idea of universal income helping eliminate poverty, but I feel that people should get a job in order to be able to fund their lifestyle.  I think it is important for people to learn to live off of the income they earn and not depend on the government or others.  If you are unhappy with the income you are currently earning, you should look for a new job or go to school and earn a degree so that you can get a better job.

  • No, we should definitely not have a Universal Basic Income. Univeral Basic Incomes pay people who are choosing not to work, and it pays them with the money of people who are working. On top of this, if everyone's income is provided by the government then the government has control over those people. That is why communism always leads to tyranny. UBI is an absolutely horrible idea.

  • I don't think that universal basic income is a great idea. America is already $28 trillion in debt. I feel like giving money to everybody would create more problems than it solves. It could give people a reason to not work at all instead of working and making money that way.

  • i think we should have a universal basic income beacuse, if there was a family that got there jobs taken away due to somthing then they can still get food and pay bills and other needs. i think it could do good but also make more house and other stuff go up in prices but other then that it should be fine.

  • I don't believe that a universal basic income will solve any problem, it could possibly create more. The middle class workers would be working hard to support their families while giving more money to people who aren't in work. While there are people working hard to provide for themselves and their families, they also have to struggle to support an unemployed citizen. With the money of those working, why would the unemployed look for a job or money? People might even quit their jobs to get the advantages of unemployment and that is wrong on so many levels. Our economy would crumble; and with it our country.

  • I agree that many people would see work as optional and it would maybe cause inflation. And it would probably be so low that it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway. And it shows you don't have to work hard for your money, which I don't agree with.

  • This is a terrible concept. I think that this will make people lazy and not want to work as hard. Or work at all. Our capatalistic country allows great success and to be able to have a universal income the rich would be paying insanely high taxes because even social security is loosing money right now. The government can't even afford to pay disabled and elderly citizens their monthly payment how would they be able to have a fixed income for everybody. Very socialistic idea and a bad one for America.

    • It's true that our country can barely afford to pay the disabled and the elderly and if we had a universal income, we would have to pay them more because of inflation.

  • I think rather than giving everyone a basic income, the money should be invested into communities that need it for housing, schooling, counseling, etc. This would help end poverty and homelessness and help people get the tools they need to get on their feet. Obviously, basic income for United States citizens would help people, but it has its cons.

    • It would help the homeless and end poverty, but the main con is that it would cause inflation. The money they received would soon become useless.
