Universal Basic Income

A citizen's income, or a universal basic income is a government-guaranteed payment that each citizen receives. There are multiple pros and cons based on your opinion. The pros are that it would completely destroy poverty and help millions of families pay their bills or buy food for that month. Workers could wait for better jobs to come up, whether than starting one right away that might not have the best income. People wouldn't have to worry about taking care of family issues instead of working. With this money, new couples could start a family with the confidence that they need. Many countries with falling birth rates would have the extra help to raise those numbers.

However, there are many cons to this. Inflation could be set off, due to the demands of items, such as goods and services. There would not be many houses available due to the inflations of prices. With money from the government, workers would see work as optional, creating more unemployed workers. Again, due to inflation, these small payments won't really make a difference for those in poverty. So what do you think? Should we have Universal Basic Income?

1) Should we have Universal Basic Income? Why?/Why not?

2) How do you think it will affect people in the United States?

  • I do believe we should have a universal basic income. Many people are working very hard, but still not making a liveable wage. They can't afford the basic necessities like food, water, and shelter despite working over a reasonable amount of time each week. People in our country should not be putting their physical and mental health in jeopardy by overworking themselves just so they can have food to eat and a place to sleep.

  • I don't think that we should have universal income because I believe we should have to work for money that we recieve/get. I do see how it would good/useful for some people, but in my opinion I would like to work for my money and for the people that recieved this money wouldn't really have to work which wouldn't be fair for the people that have to work no matter what.

  • No. I believe we should work for our money and not for it to be given to us. Also a major flaw in this is that the government would have to increase taxes on a lot of things and we would have to pay for it. So if we do that wouldn't we just be doing the same thing, but it's in the name of the government instead of us? Also people can wait for better jobs, then who is going to do those jobs? If we didn't have people to low paying jobs then we wouldn't have anyone who was rich, because they got rich off of us. It will affeect us negatively.

  • No, we should not have a universal basic income, this could lead to inflation. I think many people would lose the motivation to work and make money. I think that it would impact people in the united states quite negatively. We should not try this idea.

  • I don't think we should have universal income because we shouldn't get money handed to us and we should have to work for it. Another reason I feel we shouldn't have it is that people won't have to work and then they will just get free money handed to them.

  • I believe universal basic income would be very beneficial to people. They should replace requirments in some aspect though. Have the head of the household hold a stable job for a month at least and continue with that job. Extra help is not a bad thing and should never be shamed for it. Miliions of people struggle with poverty and such things. If the government can send money to other countries, then they can help their own people. Just make sure the people receiving help are working and making a attempt to gain a stable income. It would help so many people across the US greatly. I think this is a good idea. Give more money to people with less and less to people with more. None to anyone making over 150.000  income with no kids.

    • The main issue of giving people who struggle with poverty is that the national debt, which is currently about 28 trillion dollars, would rise, and would continue to rise the more money we gave.

  • I don't think we should have universal basic income because we are already in debt so that would put us more in debt. Some people also work really hard for their money so that would not be fair to them if they also recieved the same as someone who doesn't do anything. I think it would however bring people out of poverty.

  • I think it would do a great job of getting homeless people and poverty off the streets it will give everybody a little bit of cash to get them by ecspecially with covid and people lossing their jobs we should have this income. It will help people not really affect them and it might give people money to do bad things with.

  • I don't think we should have a universal basic income. I believe that people need to work for their money. If we were all handed enough money to survive without working, why would anyone work? I think that if we did have a universal income it would help those in need but would hurt everyone in the long run as it would make our economy plummet.
