Universal Basic Income

A citizen's income, or a universal basic income is a government-guaranteed payment that each citizen receives. There are multiple pros and cons based on your opinion. The pros are that it would completely destroy poverty and help millions of families pay their bills or buy food for that month. Workers could wait for better jobs to come up, whether than starting one right away that might not have the best income. People wouldn't have to worry about taking care of family issues instead of working. With this money, new couples could start a family with the confidence that they need. Many countries with falling birth rates would have the extra help to raise those numbers.

However, there are many cons to this. Inflation could be set off, due to the demands of items, such as goods and services. There would not be many houses available due to the inflations of prices. With money from the government, workers would see work as optional, creating more unemployed workers. Again, due to inflation, these small payments won't really make a difference for those in poverty. So what do you think? Should we have Universal Basic Income?

1) Should we have Universal Basic Income? Why?/Why not?

2) How do you think it will affect people in the United States?

  • Great topic choice Jaiden! Your summary is pretty good but could be a bit longer(three paragraphs). You also could have replied a few more times as well(should have around 15 replies). -10 late

  • I don't think that it would be a good idea because I think that people would just get lazy and depend on the government to do everything for them. In America, you should have to work for everything you get, not just be handed something. If this were to happen in the beginning people would be doing well but then we wouldn't get anything done.

  • I do not think that we should have universal basic income, if we do it would lead to higher taxes. It could also lead to people freeloading off the system. I think that people should get the money they work for, and they should not have a large chunk of their paycheck going towards people that aren't working.

  • I do not think that there should be a Universal Basic Income. I see the pros to this and I think it would be great if nobody lived in poverty, but I do not see that happening. I think the government should not be handing money out left and right, but I bet there can be another solution to this situation.

  •  No I dont think that there should be Universal basic  income because it would make people think that they don't need to work for their money. Then there would be no workers to produce the goods that we need a a daily basis and the world would stop.

  • I dont think should have universal basic income. I believe this because it could cause the homelessness to increase because houses could be very expensive. I also think, like you said, that it could cause unemployment rates to increase.

  • I think that to a certain extent we should have basic income. Every person in the U.S. deserves to have a paycheck allowing them to meet the demands of what you find in America. However, I do not think that the government should be handing out money left and right, because people will become lazy and dependent on the government for money. And when and if the government stops doing it, they won't be able to live anymore. I think that it will benefit some, and anger others. It really just depends on the person.

  • No, I do not think that there should be a Universal Basic Income. I believe that if you want the money, then you need to work for it. There are already so many people who just live off of the government that could very easily be out there working at a job. Also, like you said inflation would rise a lot and everything would just become more expensive because "people would have the money", but it would really just cause a lot more uneeded problems.

  • aI do not think there should be universal income. First, At the time of writing this, the country is in $28,006,833,333,356 in debt and we do not need anymore. Next, the country would think that if the government is paying them then why do they need to work.

  • I think that we should have universal basic income because there are many people that I know (counting my family) that work their butts off every day of their life just to just very minimal wage just to live. I think it is crazy that people work just as hard as other people that have millions of dallars and they work just to have a roof over their head.
