Undefeated wrestler lets opponent win!

An undefeated high school wrestler named Deven Schuko was facing an opponent named Andy Howlet. Howlet has down syndrome and has been wrestling for seven years. Schuko went out onto the mat and purposely lost to Howlet. Schuko says that Howlet was a very good wrestler and he was a very hard opponent. "He put in a front headlock and just whipped me over."Schuko says. Schucko is ranked number 1 in his weight class and for Howlet winning this match meant everything.

Questions

Would you do the same thing that Schuko did or not? Explain.

How would you react if this happened to you?

My opinion

I would do the same thing because it is really awesome that such a good wrestler could do something like that. If this happened to me I would probably jump around and be really happy.

  • Well done!

  • I think I might have - in wrestling, more than any other sport, I see incredible athletes going out to compete and purposely losing to make someone else's day. It's not often that these kinds of matches are even counted on their record or affect their ranking, so why not? If you can make somebody who's disabled feel like they're on top of the world, you should always take that opportunity. To answer you second question, of course I would be excited if I had just beaten the #1 wrestler in the state. Not only have I just won the match, but another human being has shown that s/he cares about me - and that's a great feeling.

  • I might do the same thing because winning to me could just be a normal thing, but little things like beating someone for someone with a disease or condition can mean a lot more to them. ON the other hand, you want to make them better and so you always try and you never fully let them win. Letting people win isn't gonna always get them places. In life, people just don't let you off easy with things, you have to learn eventually that you aren't always gonna have people letting you win. You have to face reality.

  • I would be really happy if this was my kid and they let him for once. I think that this undefeated wrestler should proud of himself for making this kids day and probably making his parents day. Winning isn't always everything but it can definitely make someone's day.

    • I agree with everything that you said. I do believe that winning isn't everything but yes winning can definitely make someones day.
