Typhoon Mangkhut Rages On

One of the strongest storms this year just hit the Philippines Sunday after already passing through mainland China and Hong Kong. So far, the storm has killed 2 people in southern China and as of right now, 54 in the Philippines. It raged on through the weekend and there are those saying there is more to come. So far, the Philippines has been hit the hardest with a death toll of 54, with 34 injured and 42 more missing. In Hong Kong, the winds were recorded at 107 miles per hour with gusts up to 138 miles per hour, which is stronger than Hurricane Florence that hit North Carolina over the weekend. From the Philippines, Mangkhut is expected to move towards western Guangdong. The good news is that the storm has weakened some and only has a warning of T8 instead of T10.

Q1: What would you do if you were an official in charge during this situation?

I would make sure that all citizens were safe, then I would start the clean up process as soon as possible so people could get back to their own homes.

Q2: Would you say this typhoon compares to Hurricane Florence in any way?

It does compare to the hurricane, it's just that it's killed so many more people and destroyed more land and property that it makes the hurricane look like a small storm. It's going to take a long time to get this typhoon cleaned up.

  • Well done Olivia!

  • I would make sure it was safe and then tell anyone that wants to leve to get out of their. Then I would get a clean up process going while providing other shelter. Yes, becasue they are both very dangerous in many ways, but the typhoon did a lot more damage then Hurricane Florance did to the east coast.

  • I would tell everyone that it was a maditory evacuation and to leave the area. Yes because they are both record breaking wind speeds and lots ofwheather damedge..

  • I would make sure everyone is calm as possilble and is exited out the bulding as soon as possible. I'd make sure everyone is safe and would care to the injured. I think this does compare to the hurricane Florence because it causes so much damage and injures and kills so many people.

  • First I would say to everyone to stay calm, then I would see if they are safe and okay and, at the end, I would do all the procedures to give their homes back. I think the hurricane is as dangerous as the typhoon, the only difference is that the typhoon killed more people and the hurricane it's getting slow .

  • I would make sure that the poeple were safe and then I would try to make sure that they could get back home or wherever the needed to go. I think this does compare to the hurrican becuse its killed a lot of people and caused damage.

  • My first step would be to remain calm, and make sure all of the citizens are as safe as possilbe. Getting people out of the impact zone would be a big priority, as well as starting the clean up process. I think this does compare to Hurricane Florence, but I think it is on a much high scale. It also make it worse because the Philippines is just a string of 1,000 islands. There is no where to go really that is safe from the typhoon.

  • I would do my best to keep as many people as possibe from freaking out. I would make sure that everyone is in the safest place possible so they would have the best chance of surviving. It sounds like this storm is a lot worse than Hurricane Florence. But they are both dealing extreme damage.

    • It is a good idea for an official to stay calm when things are chaotic, like this storm was. So I would agree that keeping the calm is an important key in keeping everyone safe. After everyone is calm, dealing with the immensity of the storm would be easier.

  • I would definitely try to get people out of the impact zone. If 56 people have died from this storm then it's obviously dangerous. Everyone being safe would be my top priority.

It does have some constrasting features, but yes you could compare it to Florence. I think the biggest difference between this typhoon and Florence is how deadly it is. However, they both weakened upon entering the main land.
