Tsunami hits Indonesia after earthquake

On Friday afternoon the ground on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia started shaking. The first tremors were felt at 3 p.m. 35 miles noth of the city Palu. Houses started to collapse, people were ordered to remain alert and stay out of buildings as good as possible. The largest shock which was measured was 50 miles north of Palu and had a magnitude of 7.5. The airport got closed and a tsunami warning was send out but many people didn't have enough time to evacuate. A big tsunami, caused through the earthquake, hit the island and left hundreds of buildings and homes damaged or destroyed, many people injured and about 380 dead. Rescue teams are still searching for missing people and cleaning up the cities which were hit.

Q1: What would you do if you were on vacation at this place and something like this would happen?

At first I would try to get out of the region were the tsunami will hit the island and get to a safer place and after that call my family and friends to tell them that I'm okay and wait until i get a chance to get home.

-Q2: What do you think would be the first steps of the government after such a strong earthquake?

I think the most important thing would be to take care of all injured people and search for missing people. They should support the families who lost their homes and  start to clean up and rebuild destroyed or damaged houses.

  • Great job overall Natalie! Next time, be sure to reply back three different days instead of two.

  • If I were in a place where a natural disaster such as this occured the first thing I would do is try to get out of the effected area.  Then I would get to a place such as a hotel and call family member to let them know I was ok.  Or if there was a lot of people around me who were hurt I would help them get to a place for treatment.  Because if I were hurt I would want others to help me in a time of need.

  • I would be pretty frightened and I would try to leave as soon as possible. I think the first is to find the dead. Then they start the clean up process. They then can start the rebuilding process.

  • If I was in a foreign country and something like this happened I would try and follow what the locals were doing because if you live in this part of the world you have definitely been through this before and would know what to do or where to go. I think that the first steps a government would take is to get the survivors out and into safety

    • I agree with you it would be the best to try to act like everyone else around you so you can orientate your own behavior and don't run around without having any plans what to do

  • If I was on vacation at this place I would try to evacuate as soon as I possible can. Or at least get far enough away that I wouldn't get hurt or my loved ones wouldn't get hurt. The most important thing the government should do first would be to take care of the people that were involved in the incident. And the second thing that should be done is get seach parties out or people out to find the missing and or dead people

    • you are right it is important to try to stay together when you are on vacation with friends or family so you don't have to be afraid that something happened to them and i also think you would feel safer when you are with people you know

  • If I was on vacation in this place, I would evacuate myself as soon as I could. If I couldn't get out in time, I'd get as safe as I could. The government should immediately go to the people and help them after a strong earthquake like this one.

  • I would try and get a flight out of there right away or drive as far as I could where it coud barely affect me. I think they would probably tell everyone to stay calm and that help is on there way at some point. I think that they would have been well prepared for this natural diseaster.

    • staying calm is an important thing in this situation because if people would panic or something it would be more difficult to help them, care about the injured people and search for missing ones
