Trump vs. Biden First Presidential Debate

The first Presidential debate was September 29th, 2020. The debate was between President Donald Trump (Republican) and Vice President Joe Bidden (Democrat). Coming into this debate millions of people wanted to watch it because they wanted to see what would get brought up between the two, if there were going to be a lot of arguments, or if they would shake/elbow bump before the debate started. The moderator Chris Wallace had a lot on his plate on Tuesday in my opinion. I believe that this was the worst presidential debate in history. I think that it was a chaotic debate in which President Donald Trump interrupted Vice President Joe Bidden many times. In my opinion President Trump barely let Biden speak and when Biden did get to speak he was always interrupted by Trump. I think that this could have been Trump’s strategy going into this debate; not letting Biden get anything out of his mouth.

Many news outlets say that there was no winner in this debate, or that this was the worst debate they have ever saw. Many were disappontied because both of the canadaties bickered and argueed which isn't what they wanted. Trump also called out Biden’s family as Biden did to Trump’s family. At one point in the debate Biden said to Trump, “Will you shut up, man? This is so unpresidential”. Biden also called Trump a “clown” during the debate. Saying both of those to Trump was very unpresidential on Biden’s part. President Donald Trump also refused to denounce white supremacy on National TV. President Trump totally avoided the question by bringing up Antifa to Vice President Joe Biden. Biden also avoided a lot of questions during the debate in my opinion, and multiple times in the debate Chris Wallace, the moderator, had to rephrase the question to Joe Biden and/or get Bidden back on the question. In my opinion I think that this debate was not a good debate for either candidate. I hope that in the next debate between Trump and Biden there is less interruption and more talk about what the American people want to hear from their candidates.

In your opinion who won the first debate? Explain!

I believe that President Trump won this debate because he was the one that talked more out of the two candidates, and he really made Vice President Joe Biden struggle throughout the debate.

How do you think the moderator, Chris Wallace, controlled the stage of the debate?

I believe that Chris Wallace definitely tried to handle the chaotic debate, but didn’t do a very good job of it. Wallace should have stepped in earlier in some cases to try to stop the arguing of Trump and Biden.

  • Good job Brayton!

  • I believe that president trump may have won but I think that it was still really close. I believe that for the same reason as you just because president trump got more of his opinions in. I think the moderator did about everything in his power to control the stage but I don't think there was much more he could do.

    • I agree with you that President Trump got more opinions in than Vice President Joe Biden did. I also agree with you that Chris Wallace was doing everything in his power to try to stop the two canidates from arguing and at one point in the debate he even yelled at both of them telling them to grow up.

  • I don't think there was a true winner. The debate really showed the true colors of these canidates, and neither one is a good choice. It's not about who won, it's more about how America is going to lose either way. I think Chris Wallace was bias against Trump. At some points, it almost seemed like he was agreeing with Biden and helping him with his points, which is not what a moderator is supposed to do.

    • I agree with you that this did show the true colors of both Trump and Biden. I also agree with you that Chris Wallace was bias and was defiently on Bidens side. Wallace even chuckled at one point in the dabate in favor of Biden and I feel as tho he stopped Trump more that Biden.

  • Although the debate wasn't very good, I believe that President Trump won the debate because he knew more about what he was talking about than Vice President Joe Biden. Chris Wallace was trying his hardest not to raise his voice, or get mad at the candidates, but I feel like he should have tried harder to make the candidates listen to him.

    • I agree with you that President Trump won the debate because he had more information that he said. Biden definetly got rattled up because of Trump also inturupting him. Chris Wallace was definetly trying his hardest and not trying to yell, but that did not really work for him.

  • I think Trump won the debate because Biden was very confused during the debate and didn't have good points. I think Chris Wallace tried to control it but Biden and Trump do not like each other very well so it was very hard to control them from talking over each other.

    • I agree with you. I also thought that Trump won the debate because he had Biden spinning in circles during the debate. The debate also got very heated with Trump and Biden yelling at each other and then Chris Wallace, with the most difficult task, came in and had to seperate the two.

  • I completely agree, but in a different sense than usual. Biden could hardly speak a word befor Trump would interupt, meaning he couldn't voice his side. Yet, this same fact shows that Trump was acting like a big man-baby. Just because of how trump acted, I'd say that biden did slightly better. Not because of what he did, but because of what he didn't do.
