Tropical Storm Harvey Hits Texas

Early today and yesterday a category 1 storm hit Texas. The storm has devastated many parts of Texas and is said to continue causing damage well into the next few days. Many houses have been toppled and flooding is wreaking havoc among people. Officials have warned people to leave the areas immediately and many have already left. One official told the people who planned to stay in the area that they should "write their social security numbers on their arms" for easy identification of the bodies. There are more than 1,000 workers currently trying to help out. The storm has sustained winds of more than 70 mph, but during the storm it is said the winds were up to 140 mph. It is said that more than 40 inches of rain are supposed to hit through Wednesday. Officials have said that certain areas could be effected for months to come. This is one of the worst storms since Katrina.

Does this event effect you personally? Do you have any family/friends in Texas?

Would you have stayed in Texas? Why or why not?

I have several close friends in Texas, some of which have actually evacuated. I'm a bit worried for the ones that stayed in the area and I am worried for their homes. I would not have stayed in Texas because I wouldn't want to be injured.

  • Great job overall! Be sure to comment on three different days next time.

  • No, this event doesn't effect me personally and I do not have any family living in Texas. This is a very devastating event and I feel very bad for all the people that have to go through this. Leaving your house behind and all of your belongings has to be tough. I would have not stayed in Texas because I would not want to risk my potential life over staying at my house.

    • I agree! I would not be able to stay in the area for very long for fear of my safety. I would take as much personal stuff as I could possibly take. Would you take anything specific?

  • This event hasn't effected me personally, but I do have family that lives in the northern part of state. If I was in a location where the storm could potentially hit, then I would start packing up and leaving while I have time, but if I was somewhere North or out of the way of the storm, I would probably stay.

  • This does not effect me personally but it does effect me in some kind of way. I feel bad for the people who had to leave their homes and many things behind. I am worried for everyone there and especially the ones who chose to stay behind instead of leaving. I would not have stayed in Texas because I would not want to risk my life for my house. I would go back after the storm to help with clean up and helping others.

    • I agree! I would not stay either. I think it's really great that you would go back and help. I think a lot of people would be scared to go back after all that happened.

  • Although I don't have any family or friends in Texas, I feel really bad about the people because they are losing everything they have.

If it was possible for me to help other people (which I don't think so because I am just "a little girl"), I would have wanted to stay. But otherwise I would have tried to save my own life and the lives of my family and friends and to go to a safe place.

    • Even small people can help out! Where do you think you would go if you had to leave?

  • 1) As of right now this storm hasn't effected me personally, but it might effect my parents/family members with taxes rising to help Texas. Overall it won't really effect me personally, but I feel terrible for all those people down there. Also, it won't effect me personally because I don't have any family members down there, but all of those people will be in our prayers.

    2) I would not have stayed in Texas because I would be terrified of getting hurt and/or dying and getting trapped. I would be scared if I would have stayed so I would've left when they told us, too.

    • I agree it would be scary to stay. Do you think you would ever volunteer or donate to help out?
