Sean Murphy, a photographer for the Massachusetts State Police, has retired after he leaked photographs of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the suspect of the Boston Marathon bombing. The police veteran released the photos after Rolling Stone put the suspect on its magazine cover, furious that they depicted Tsarnaev as some kind of "young rock star". The images that Murphy released showed Tsarnaev "dazed and bloody with a police sharpshooter's laser sight trained on his head". Murphy wanted to contradict Rolling Stone's cover and show the terror felt by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev at the very moment of his confrontation with the police. I think what Sean Murphy did was very brave, and I am glad that he released the photo. Even though he received a lot of backlash, I think that the US needed to see the picture to truly understand that this man wasn't someone to look up to. Do you think that Sean Murphy should have released the photo?

Here is the story.

  • Excellent job once again!

  • I think that what he did was very brave. The Rolling Stone's magazine made a mistake putting him on the cover of their magazine, and so Sean Murphy was only trying to "set the record straight" and make sure people know that this guy is not a "rockstar," he's a criminal.

    • That is exactly what I thought! He shouldn't be punished for portraying a man for the criminal that he is.

  • I agree that they showed he wasn't someone to look up to, but I don't think this was the way to go. In a way, it was like releasing private stuff that only the police should have known. It wasn't really anyone's business to know what he looked like.

    • I get what you are saying with the points you've made, but I think that many of the families that were affected by the Boston Marathon Bombing needed to see this picture to get closure for the bombing.

  • I think it was a good idea to show the pictures to everybody because it showed how we captured him.

  • I don't really get the photo. This is so confusing to me. But yes, the U.S. needed to see the photo. Most def.

    • It is a picture of one of the bombers of the Boston Marathon. This picture shows him when he is being captured by the police. The photo wasn't supposed to be released because of its content, but it was leaked anyway. Does it make any sense now?

  • I think that we as citizens have the right to see the man who did this. I think it should be considered public information. It's my right to know exactly who did this. Even though he leaked it when he wasn't supposed to I think eventually I would have wanted to know exactly who did it.

    • I agree. We had the right to see who the bomber was. After everything that he did, we deserved to see this picture.
