Transplant guidelines too late for rabies victim....

A man from Maryland who had a kidney transplant, from 20 year old William Edward Small, died last month from rabies. One of the symptoms of rabies is encephalitis which is brain inflammation which this donor had, doctors thought his symptoms were caused by a food-borne toxin, ciguatera, which is carried in saltwater fish, but doctors did no test to make sure it was ciguatera. Um excuse me if someone, that's donating an organ or blood, has symptoms of one thing that has the same symptoms of another wouldn't you do some tests just to be sure you don't give whatever the illness is to the person that its going to? I would think so but I'm not trained to be a doctor, though you would think it would be smart to make sure that it's not something that could KILL someone.

This is so sad. I would sue the hospital if i found out they didn't do enough tests and a family member died as a cause of it. I just hope that his family will be ok

I was watching scrubs one time and they used three organs from the same person to give to three different people. They were in a hurry because the other people really needed the organs. The donor had rabies and all three people died. Who would think rabies though... they are so rare.

That's horrible there should be more test required to be a donor. at least he got a a second chance at life even if it didn't last very long.

how does rabies get in a kidney transplant?! wouldn't they figure out that something was wrong with it first? i feel bad for the family who had to go through this. i think all doctors should take concern to this so it doesn't happen again

That is really crazy. Don't they test for that kind of stuff before they give them the transplant?

thats so terrible. Those doctors should feel terrible because if they hadn't of been so un professional someone wouldn't have lost their life

OMG this is so sad and awful, you are going into surgery thinking this will save your life and it ends up killing you?! SO CRAZYYYYY!!!! and sad
