Train hits SUV

In White Plains, New York a train ran into a SUV on the tracks. The train drive noticed a reflection on the tracks and noticed it was a vehicle and pulled the emergency brake in the train. The train was traveling at 48 mph and hit the vehicle and went another 650 ft before it stopped.

The impact killed the driver of the car and 5 people on the train. After the impact a fire started in the train and the conductor and all of the passengers got of the train.

I think that this is a very sad accident and hope that nobody else get hurt from this and we learn from it.

1. what would you do if you were driving the train?

2. Why do you think the man pulled out on the tracks?

3. Do you think the conductor should get fired?

  • I would try and stop if I was driving the train as much as I could. I think the car that pulled out on the tracks was maybe not thinking or just trying to kill himself.

  • If I was driving the train, I would have reacted the same way as the driver did. Stop the train. There was nothing else the conductor could do besides try and stop the train. The car that pulled out on the tracks was maybe trying to kill them self.

  • I would have done the same thing as the original conductor is. When it comes to something as powerful as a train, it's next to impossible to stop in time for something on the tracks, so you just have to do the best you can.

I don't know why, maybe he had a death wish, or maybe it was part of a dare.

No, not at all. I think the conductor did his job perfectly. He pulled the emergency break in an attempt to brace for impact. It's not the conductor's fault that a car was parked on the tracks.

  • There really is nothing more the train conductor could do other than pull the emergency breaks. Trains stop very slowly because of their size. I think that the person was trying to cross before the train got their, but got stuck on the tracks when the arms came down to stop traffic. I do not think the conductor should get fired because it was not his fault.

  • I would probably look away.

  • This is in no way the conductors fault. He was lucky to even see the car, and had he known it was there from a half mile away, he still would have hit it. The conductor shouldn't be fired for something he had no power over.

  • It sounds like the conductor did everything right and shouldn't be fired. I would have pulled the brake as soon as I noticed the vehicle just like he did. The driver of the vehicle most likely thought that he could beat the train. I would have never done anything like that. It's just too risky. When the lights that let you know when a train is coming start flashing, it obviously means that you stop and wait for the train to go by.

  • Good point he might of wanted to die.

  • I would do as he did.... Guess there isnt much you can do. And i dont think the man was paying attention. Either that, or he wanted to die.... a form of suicide. No, i dont think the conductor should get fired. It wasnt his fault. He couldnt stop the train in time, and its not his fault that the man pulled onto the tracks.
