December and November are always the big months for films that just can't be squeezed into summer. Avatar is an example, and it became the biggest moneymaker of all time, thanks to some key things: 1. Repeated Weekends. In January and February, few films are released that have a potential to top the box office, and with declining numbers week after week, you're going to make profit. 2. Repeated Viewings. Some people have absolutely nothing to do in early Winter, so they see a movie, and sometimes they see the same movie twice, or three times, so more profit comes in. 3. Massive Appeal. December movies usually get great reviews, both from the audience and the critics, and the more people like a movie, the more they'll see it. So with these things in mind, the studios have been playing musical chairs with some of the hottest films to be released this December. First, Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn from Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T.) has moved from December 23rd to December 21st, a Wedensday. Next, War Horse, also from Spielberg has moved from December 28th to Christmas Day December 25th. However, Mission: Impossible 4, originally slated for release on the 21st, is now moved up to December 16th, competing against Sherlock Holmes 2. Busy, busy, busy.
