Tiger Numbers Could Double by 2022

A new study in Science Advances says that doubling the numbers of tigers can be achieved. Using Google Earth and Global Forest watch to figure out the loss of habitats for Tigers they figured with what was left of the remaining habitats would let the tigers number get to about 6,400 tigers as long as the forested areas stay intact. The numbers of tigers have been dropping because of poachers and the land being destroyed but according to Anup Joshi. The reason why the land being destroyed has decresed is because people on the land are protecting it.

My thoughts: It is definetely amazing that they want to double the number of tigers because that is desperately needed. I think if the land stays untouched/not destroyed they will be able to do it. To be able to stop poachers they would either have to catch them in the act or track them down to where they could be staying at. Maybe they could put up some kind of camera so they can keep and eye on the tigers and any suspicious behavior like poachers.

Questions-

Do you think they will be able to double the number of tigers by 2022?

What do you think they could do to try and stop poachers?

  • Good job!

  • This shows how much technology has changed and how helpful it can be. It will be awesome if they can double it and succeed, but I think it will be hard, especially with poachers. There will be some challenges that they will have to face, but I think they could definitely make an impact.

    • That is very true. And it is quite an amazing thing that technology has evolved this much for them to be able to even do this and hopefully they can!

  • If everything goes as planned I definitely think this goal could be close to reached, but there is always "road blocks" that come up and affect the outcome somehow. I think to stop poachers, more discipline could be placed on rules and requirements of the area, and more security could be set up.

    • Yeah that is a very good idea! More security is definitely something they need!

  • If the poachers are still out there, I think it will be hard to double them. I think they could get harsher punishments and more officers to protect the tigers.

    • Yeah it is definetely very hard with poachers being out there! They should definitely get harder punishments if they catch the poachers!

  • I sure hope that they can double the numbers. Someday i'd like to be able to take my children to the zoo and show them what a tiger is and have them do the same. I dont know what else they can do because I feel like they are already doing everything possible.

    • Yeah very true. And hopefully they teach children the importance of animals!

  • I think it is awesome that they want to multiply the number of tigers because we are getting low on a lot of african animals. If the land that the tigers live on are reserved so people can not come in and destroy it than they would be able to multiply. so yes i think they can by 2022!

to stop poachers they can set up traps to get them and then i agree put trackers in them and find out where they are located and get the whole trib
